Dannemora Alan Leigh Walpole, 73, of Manley Street in Dannemora, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014 at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh with family by his side. He was born in Groton, New York on July 28, 1940, the son of the late Arthur and Isabelle (Ford) Walpole. Leigh graduated from Groton High School in 1958 and attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville on a basketball scholarship. He graduated in 1963 with an Education Degree and began teaching History and English at Dannemora High School in 1964. He taught for 25 years and finished his career of 31 years at Saranac Central School. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for several years. He was a long time member of the Cranberry Pond Hunting Club. He was an avid outdoorsman, reader and loved the Adirondacks. He is survived by his children and spouses; Eileen and Greg Henrie of Oswego, N.Y., Greg and Paula Walpole of Perkasie, Pa., Katie and Michael Lewis of Elbridge, N.Y., Christina Walpole of Fayetteville, N.Y., Daniel Walpole of Syracuse, N.Y., Joseph Walpole of Ticonderoga, his longtime companion, Iris Stow of Saranac, his siblings and their spouses; Joan and Ed Monahan of Orlando, Fl., Bernard and Judith Walpole of Peru, 7 grandchildren; Conor, Rory, Riley, Reagan, Kieran, Aidan and Rowan, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 32 years, Christine (O'Connell) Walpole, an infant son Conor and a brother, Arthur Walpole. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2014 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St. in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Friday, May 2, 2014 at St. Joseph's Church in Dannemora. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Ovid, N.Y. To honor Leigh's memory, the family encourages everyone to consider donating blood and platelets to the American Red Cross. Memorial donations may be offered to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
