Mr. Albert (Al) J. Sabanos, Jr. (89), formally of Plattsburgh, New York passed into eternal life Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Glen Cove Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation with his family by his side. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on March 19, 1929, the son of Albert and Mary (Konkolovsky) Sabanos.
Al attended Brooklyn Technical High School and New York University Graduate School, where he received his Masters degree in Business Administration and Management. He had varied interests and enjoyed reading, traveling and entertaining people. Prior to moving to Plattsburgh, Al was employed by General Motors Overseas Operations in New York City, serving in several positions, and was Staff Assistant to management for Logistics and dealing with U.S. Customs. During the Korean Conflict, He received training in Newport, RI, to be an ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Upon completion, he was assigned to Washington, D.C, as a Communications Officer with the Chief of Naval Operations. He was active in St. Peter’s Church serving as Lector, Eucharistic Minister, Baptismal preparation classes, soup kitchen and choir. He was a member of D.A.V. Chapter 179 in Plattsburgh.
He was predeceased by his beloved, and deeply missed, wife of 32 years, Marge, his parents, Albert and Mary, brother William, and his twin sisters Viola and Catherine.
Albert is survived by three children: Artie Sabanos and his wife, Marge, of Nineveh, New York, and their children Samantha, Christopher, and his son Jack; Liz McCabe and her husband, Philip, of Glen Cove, Long Island and their children Erin and Patrick; Laura Diver and her husband, John, and their children Christina and her daughter, Malena, of Kings Park, Long Island, Madeline Rice and her husband, Tyler, of Smithtown, New York, their children Tyler, Jr., and Charlotte.
Prior to Al’s move to Long Island, his son and daughters had lovingly taken care of him, despite their being some 300 (+) miles apart. Liz, especially, visited Al every 2 to 3 months, preparing meals which were stored in his freezer for use as required. All were most helpful and kept in close touch, always.
Calling hours will be Wednesday March 13, 2019, from 2:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St., Plattsburgh, New York.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday March 14, 2019 at 9:30 am at St. Peter’s Church.
Interment will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
Donations may be made in his name to the Emmaus Room at St. Peter’s Church.
