Alice D. Church Mannix, 85 of Morrisonville, New York passed away unexpectedly on June 13, 2021, at CVPH Medical Center with her loving husband and daughter by her side.
Alice DeMar was born in Saranac Lake on September 28, 1935. She was the daughter of Henry DeMar and Olive (McCormick) and stepdaughter of John (Jack) Bullock. She graduated from Saranac Lake High School and the Plattsburgh Teacher’s College with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She was a substitute teacher for the Beekmantown Central School District before marrying Robert B. Church. Together, they had two children, Thomas J. Church (Elizabeth Harding) and Kathleen C. Fessette (Allen Fessette) and were co-proprietors of The Sugar House Antiques and Gifts.
Alice spent several years at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital as Community Health Educator/Patient Representative. She was also a realtor with Century 21, Lighting Consultant for Champlain Valley Electric, and Director of The Champlain Valley Transportation Museum.
She was an active member of the local community, giving countless hours of volunteer service to various committees and boards. She was Chairman of the Clinton County Mental Health Association, served on board of directors for The Foundation of CVPH and for The Alice T. Miner Museum, Docent for The Plattsburgh State Art Museum, and was instrumental in planning the Israel Green Tavern at the annual Battle of Plattsburgh, to name just a few of her many accomplishments. She was a member of the Elks Club and The Rotary Club where she struck up a friendship with Marty Mannix.
Alice led an active professional and social life, trailblazing an independent lifestyle far ahead of her time, until finding her greatest joy in the last years of her life. Alice Church and Martin Mannix, Jr. were married in 2013 and shared just shy of eight years of wedded bliss.
Besides her loving husband and children, she will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her five grandsons who affectionately called her “Albee.” Her grandsons are Ryan Fessette, Kent Fessette, Devin Fessette, Hunter Church, and John Casey Church. Albee had a rich and plentiful band of friends, many of whom were like extended family. She will be remembered for her beauty and grace, her culinary skills, her exquisite eye for interior design and lighting, and her extensive knowledge of antiquities. Alice loved to travel with friends and family. She loved to garden, read, and brag about her grandsons.
