Plattsburgh Arthur Albert Newgarden, 85, of Oak Street in Plattsburgh, passed away Friday, August 31, 2012 at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh after a year long struggle. He was born in New York City on March 26, 1927, the son of the late Joseph and Dorothea (Smith) Newgarden. After his Army service, he earned his Bachelors and Masters Degrees at State University of New York. He taught at Rochester Institute of Technology. Then he turned from academia to develop the successful Wonderland Studios. After returning to the University of Buffalo, he earned his PhD and in 1964 came to Plattsburgh to teach philosophy at our college here. For a time during his years here, he served as head of United University Professors. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Cynthia (Cline) Newgarden and seven children; Dorothea and Steve Ladd, Tina and Peter Blackwood, Amy Newgarden, Kate Beyer, Louisa Hogan, Alexander Newgarden and Nicholas Newgarden, and nineteen grandchildren: Seth, Ethan, and Katrina; Christopher, Carrie and Ian; Sylvia, John, William and Nathaniel; Ella and George, Laura, Benjamin, and Anna; Carli, Olivia, and Hannah; and Daniel. They all loved to hear his magical stories. Three great grandchildren; Stewart, Eli, Ryland, and Elijah were dear to him. He was the eldest of eight and leaves four sisters; Nancy Talbot, Suzanne and John Sales, Barbara and Clifford Chappell, and Peggy Seals, and three brothers; Joseph, Jack, and Raymond Newgarden. During his lifetime, he was both a persuasive lecturer and author of moving stories and poems. He often said that " the fire in the hearts of individuals kept both democracy and the arts alive." In accordance with Arthur's wishes, there will be no calling hours. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 2:00 pm in the Brown Funeral Home Chapel. Memorial donations may be offered to the Plattsburgh Public Library.
