Plattsburgh Mrs. Bernadette G. "Bernie" Brown, 90, of Cumberland Head, passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at the Meadowbrook Healthcare Facility in Plattsburgh with her family by her side. She was born in Loon Lake (Inman), New York on May 21, 1918 the daughter of Charles and Grace (Agnew) Royal. Bernie was a graduate of Our Lady of Victory Class of 1935 and the Champlain Valley School of Nursing, Class of 1939 becoming a registered nurse. She worked at Champlain Valley Hospital and CVPH Medical Center. Later in her career she was a private duty nurse. Bernie enjoyed bowling, and spending time with family and friends. She was the oldest alumni of the Champlain Valley School of Nursing. Bernie was a member of the Ladies of the Elks Plattsburgh Lodge #621, Plattsburgh Women's Bowling Association and participated in many bowling tournaments and traveling to the Senior Games. She was a member of Our Lady of Victory Altar Rosary Society and St. Mary's of the Lake Church. She and her late husband John P. Brown owned and operated Payson's Furniture and West End Furniture Store in Plattsburgh. She was predeceased by her parents Charles and Grace Royal, her husband John P. Brown, a son Robert Brown, her sisters; Sister Mary Bernadette of the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis, Dorothy Swimm, Blanche Gauthier and a brother-in-law Homer. Bernie is survived by two daughters; Jeanne Pope and her husband Nicholas of Loon Lake (Inman), New York, Patricia Hackett and her husband John "Jack" of Plattsburgh, one son John "Jack" Brown and his wife Lori of Plattsburgh; nine grandchildren; Robert Brown, Jr. and his fiancée, Gabrielle. Sandra Nadasky and her fiance Al, John Brown and his wife Tammy, Stephen Pope, Colleen Lemza and her husband Michael, Stephen Brown and his wife Heather, Darren Brown and his wife Karen, Cristi Wells and her husband Chase, Brad Polhemus and his wife Kimberly, twelve great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Friday, February 6, 2009 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St., Plattsburgh, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary's of the Lake Church, Cumberland Head. Interment will be at a later date at St. Peter's Cemetery.
