Saranac -- Bernard (Ben) Hayes, 86 of Saranac NY, died Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at his home. Born in Saranac, February 4, 1926, he was the son of the late Harold and Eva (LaFountain) Hayes. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the American Legion Post 1619 of West Platttsburgh, a life member of the VFW Post 125 of Plattsburgh, and a life member of the Elks. Ben served in World War II under Gen. George S. Patton, 3rd Army Infantry Division. Ben was always willing to share stories of his experiences of Landing On The Beaches Of Normandy and The Battle of the Buldge. Ben was a Master Mechanic with the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 106 for 40 years, from February 1955 to September, 1995. Survisors include, his soulmate of 33 years Shirley Rasco, five daughters, Linda Hayes of Morrisonville, Eva Pellerin and her husband Larry of Redford, Carol Launderville and her husband bob of CA, Rose Merrill of West Chazy and Brenda Martin and her husband Brian of Cadyville, a son, Ray Hayes andwife Deanne of TN, a brother, Lew Hayes of Albany, sisters, Cleo Williams of Texas, Loretta Marinucci of Albany, and Lee Keddy of North Carolina, his extended family (like-a-son) Richard M. Rasco and his wife Kari of Morrisonville, (like-a-daughter) Brenda Bouchard of Morrisonville, Mary Frenyea and her husband Leeward of Mooers Forks, and Kathleen Dowd of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, also many nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ben is pre-deceased by his son, Patrick Hayes and two daughters, Susan Hayes and Margaret Mary Hayes, his brothers, Herman and Russell Hayes, and sisters, Dorothy Moore, Winifred Hayes-Sweat and Pearl Douglas. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. James in Cadyville on Friday, December 21 at 10:00 am, burial to follow at Assumption of Mary Cemetery in Redford. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to VFW Post 125 or the Saranac Rescue Squad.
