Bertha A. Armstrong, 82, of Station Street in Altona, passed away on Monday, October 4, 2021 at her home with family by her side. She was born in Mooers Forks on June 11, 1939, the daughter of the late Edgar and Lillian (Laware) Hemmingway Jr.
She was a parishioner of Holy Angels Church, a member of the Champlain VFW Post 1418 Ladies Auxillary, and a former member of the Altona Home Bureau. She enjoyed crocheting, crafts, trips to the casino in Hogansburg, and making things for her daughters. Her faith was strong and treasured time with her family.
She is survived by 6 daughters and 4 sons in law; Darlene and Edward Orzel of Spencerville Ontario, Melody and Leo Lafave of Saranac Lake, Cynthia Cushman of West Chazy, Carol and Jay Lopez of Mooers, Terri and Lance Swinton of Mooers, Melinda Hilliker of West Chazy, her brothers and sister in law; Tony and Jamie Hemmingway of Morrisonville, Harry Hemmingway of Elizabethtown, her grandchildren; Heather, Marty, Robbie, Joey, Kayla, Katrina, Bryant, Kiley and Savannah, her great grandchildren; Victoria, Payton, Justin, Coty, Keegan, Lily, Gaven, Aiden, Brock, Kaley, Wyatt, Owhan, Abby, and Keelan, many nieces and nephews and a lifelong friend Gladys Rabideau.
Her husband, James R. Armstrong whom she married in 1956 at Holy Angels Church passed away in 2011. Her son Timothy Armstrong, her sisters; Velita, Kathy, Pearl and Shirley, and brothers; Joseph, Kenny ,Leo and David , great grandson Brady Dragon, and sons in law Donald Cushman and Jason Hilliker also passed away earlier.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, October 7, 2021 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Brown Funeral Home in Altona. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 8, 2021 at 10:30am at Holy Angels Church. Interment will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.
