Chazy Beth E. Russell, 99, formerly of Ratta Road, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at Meadowbrook Healthcare Facility in Plattsburgh. She was born in Rutland, Vermont on August 10, 1908, the younger child of Leon and Lora (Shattuck) Crowther. Beth was a graduate of Rutland High School and Castleton Normal School where she achieved a teaching degree. She first taught in Wallingford, Vermont, teaching all eight grades in a one room school house. Beth also taught in South Royalton, Shrewsbury, Belmont and Clarendon, Vermont. She married Jarvis Russell in 1941 in Springfield, Vermont, they met in Shrewsbury when she was teaching and Jarvis was a dairy farmer. Jarvis moved his dairy herd to Chittenden, Vermont where he managed a farm which was connected with Mountain Top Inn, supplying milk, vegetables and flowers for the Inn. From Chittenden, they moved to a farm in Center Rutland, Vt. where they lived for twenty seven years. Beth was very active in PTA, Home Dem and Farm, Bureau when in Center Rutland. In 1971 Jarvis, Beth and son Michael moved to a farm in Chazy. She began volunteering at the Senior Council at the D'Youville Center in 1981. Beth started work on the Senior Sentinel in the fall of 1983 where she completed ten years of service as Editor of the Senior Sentinel. Beth is survived by two daughters and one son, Nancy Catan and her husband, Jun of Manila, Philippines, Mary Russell and her companion, Howard Buck of Wallingford, Vt., Michael Russell and his wife, Kathy of Chazy, seven grandchildren, Ruth Atienza, Mars Catan and his wife, Jane, Moses Catan and his wife, Dondi, Krista Dounetos and her husband, Mike, Warren Russell and his fiancé, Ashley Denny, Sarah Locke and her husband, Josh, Thomas Russell, twelve great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Beth was pre-deceased by her husband, Jarvis Russell in 1971. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 1:00 PM at Chazy Presbyterian Church, 620 Miner Farm Road, Chazy. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Chazy Presbyterian Church, 620 Miner Farm Road, Chazy, NY 12921.
