Betty Rita Lucas

Betty R. Lucas, age 75, passed away Friday, January 11, 2019 at her home in Dannemora with family by her side. She moved back to the North Country from Merced, CA in 2017 to be with family.
She was born in Beekmantown NY on December 23, 1943, the daughter of Loran S. Giles and Rita (Brown) Giles.
She graduated from Beekmantown High School in 1961 and immediately went to work for Ayerst Laboratories in Rouses Point, NY. On July 6, 1963 she married Frank Hutchins of Boston, Ma. while he was stationed at Plattsburgh AFB. They soon moved to Merced, CA., and had one child, Anthony Wayne Hutchins, born March 21, 1964 who passed away as an infant. Betty’s second marriage was to Carson E. Lucas on January 1, 1977. Carson passed away on August 24, 2016.
Betty worked for the Merced Irrigation District as a clerk for 20 years. She owned and operated her own business, “The Mercantile” in Chowchilla, CA. for 5 years and later worked at the Merced Western Wear and Feed Store.
Betty enjoyed travelling, going to casinos, yard sales, sewing, crochet and knitting. She was also known for her beautiful hand writing.
She was predeceased by her parents, infant son, husband, brother Donald Giles, nephew Dale Giles and niece Karyn Giles Snyder.
Betty is survived by her sister Carol and Merton Weightman of Cadyville, NY, brothers Gordon Giles of Keeseville, NY., Gary and Connie Giles of Morrisonville, NY., Harold Giles of Chateaugay, NY., stepdaughter Lori Lucas of Merced, CA., and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, January 14, 2019 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St. in Plattsburgh. Graveside services will be held at the East Beekmantown Cemetery at a later date.
