Betty Lou Squier

Betty Lou Squier, 87 of Plattsburgh, NY passed away on February 21 2018 at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, NY. Betty L. (Sayward) Squier was born in Willsboro, NY on November 13, 1931. Betty L. Squier was the youngest child from a family of 10 siblings. Betty spent her early years on the family farm where she attended and graduated from Willsboro High School in 1949. Upon graduation from high school it was her desire to attend Plattsburgh Normal School to further her education and become a teacher. Coming from a farm family of meager means her goal to further educational nurturing for others was not met at that point in time. It was during her senior year in high school that she met the love of her life Robert Paul Squier of Plattsburgh, NY. Betty L. Sayward and Robert P. Squier were married on November 19, 1949. During Betty's first several years being married to Robert (Bob) Squier she dedicated her time to raising her family at home as housewife. Years later, after all three children were enrolled in school, Betty sought to re-kindle her desire to be involved in the teaching community. Betty Squier worked for Plattsburgh City School District for 24 ½ years in various positions including teacher aide and library aide and it was through this connection with fellow teachers and students that her life-long career ambition was fulfilled until her retirement in July 1991. She was a member of St. Mary's of the Lake Church in Plattsburgh, where she was an active member of and held offices in the Ladies of St. Mary's of the Lake. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader, Volunteer worker for the Clinton County Nursing Home where she also served on the Advisory Board and was the President for one year. Betty was a devout matriarch and lived life to its fullest with numerous vacation trips abroad with her husband, as well as attending children's, grandchildren's and great grandchildren's sporting events and activities. She and her husband both cherished the family reunions, holiday dinners and various family events and sought to perpetuate that tradition through until her passing. Survivors include her two sons and their spouses, Craig and Anita Squier of Plattsburgh NY, Michael Squier of Barre, VT, and her daughter, Christine (Squier) Thume of Altona NY., and five grandsons Zachary and Joshua Squier, Nathan, Gabriel and Elijah Thume and one granddaughter Emily Elizabeth Squier. Also surviving is Betty's one remaining sibling Gladys (Sayward) Cushing of Willsboro, NY. She also survived by five great grandchildren and numerous nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, and cousins. Betty Squier was predeceased by her husband Robert P. Squier, infant son Mark Squier, son-in-law David Thume, eight brothers Earl Sayward, Norman Sayward, Richard Sayward, Lawrence Sayward, Russell Sayward, Ralph Sayward, Wayne Sayward, Steven Sayward and one sister Alice (Sayward) Allen. Calling hours will be from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, February 25, 2018 at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday February 26, 2018 at 10:30 at St. Alexander's Church in Plattsburgh, NY. A private burial will be held later in the spring at St Mary's of the Lake Cemetery on Cumberland Head/Plattsburgh, NY. Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers may be made, in her memory to Clinton County Nursing Home Activities Fund or St. Mary's of the Lake Memorial Fund.
