PLATTSBURGH ” Dr. Boen Tong Kho, 88, died June 7 following a lengthy illness. He was born Dec. 3, 1919, in Indonesia, in the village of Tegal on the island of Java, to the late Kho Bian Hwat and Liem Lian Tjie. He left Indonesia when he was 19 to attend college in the Netherlands, graduating from Utrecht University in 1942 with a Candidaat degree, and from Leiden University in 1947 and 1949with Doctorandus and Apotheker degrees, respectively. Dr. Kho arrived in the U.S. in 1951, and one year later received a master's in pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, now the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. In 1957, he earned a doctorate in analytical chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Kho was a chemist at several pharmaceutical firms before joining Ayerst Laboratories in 1969. He worked there 15 years, retiring as director of analytical research and development. During his career, Dr. Kho was elected by peers to serve on the U.S. Pharmacopeia, the standards-setting authority for all prescription and over-the-counter medicines made and sold in the U.S. Family and friends will remember him for his generous spirit, his beautiful smile, his sweet sense of humor, his fluency in foreign language, his unwavering belief in higher education, and his passion for the New York Times. Most of all, he will be remembered for his love of his family. Dr. Kho is survived by his wife, Helen; his children, John (Peggy) Kho of Elmwood Park, Ill., Andrew (Nancy) Kho of Oakland, Calif., Peter Kho of Washington, D.C., and Suzanne Kho and her partner, James Werner, of Austin, Texas; his grandson David of Raleigh, N.C., and granddaughters Maddy and Lucy of Oakland, Calif.; and his brother Boen Tian Kho (Kosasih) of Surabaya and sister Hoey Nio Nie (Wijati) of Tegal. A funeral service will be conducted June 16 at 4:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 4 Palmer Street in Plattsburgh. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the North Country, 43 Durkee Street, Suite, 200, Plattsburgh, NY 12901, or the national Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, IL. 60601-7633. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St. in Plattsburgh.
