Carol Higgins, age 81, of Malone, passed away Saturday, August 17, 2019 at the Alice Hyde Medical Center. Born November 10, 1937 in Bellmont NY, she was the daughter of the late Bert and Stella (Arquette) Yando. She enjoyed knitting, rosary making, photography, reading, gardening, computers and sports. Carol graduated from St. Joseph’s Ursuline Academy in 1955.
On July 9, 1960, she was united in marriage to Walter “Tim” Higgins at Notre Dame Church in Malone, with the Rev. Robert O. Lamitie officiating.
Carol was employed by the New York Telephone Company as a telephone operator and Kraft Food Division of National Dairy Products Corp. as the office person. Later, she was employed by Notre Dame School as secretary/bookkeeper. She resigned from that position after 23 years of service. She then worked for Notre Dame Church Christian Formation Program as an assistant and later as director of the program, retiring in 1997 due to ill health.
She was a communicant of Notre Dame Church. In 1992, Carol was Commissioned Lay Minister by Stanislaus J. Brzana, Bishop of Ogdensburg. She was a consecrated vowed Third Order Member of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity (Trinitarians) and also an Ursuline Associate for many years. She was a lifelong member of the Notre Dame Rosary and Altar Society and belonged to the Alice Hyde Medical Center Auxiliary. She served on the Notre Dame Church Finance Council for several years. Carol volunteered many hours of service to Notre Dame School/Church and the Malone Community in a variety of programs. Throughout her life, she was an inspiring example of service to others.
Surviving are two sons, Kevin and Marc Higgins of Malone; one brother and sister-in-law, Edward & Gracia Yando of Morrisonville; sister-in-law Theresa Higgins and sister-in-law Kathy Boulanger of Williston, VT along with many nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins.
She is predeceased by her parents and husband, Walter “Tim” Higgins on November 17, 2007; two sisters Joanne Yando Peters of Somers, CT., and Shirley Yando Morris of Malone a brother, Armand J. Yando; three brothers-in-laws and two sister-in-laws, John Higgins of Massena, Clifton and Joyce Higgins of Moores; Virginia Lorraine Higgins; and Richard Boulanger of Williston, VT.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, August 24, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at the Notre Dame Church in Malone, NY. Interment will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to The American Cancer Society, North Country Community College or to a charity of one’s choice.
