Carolyn E. Bird, 73, previously of Cadyville, N.Y. passed away on Easter Sunday, April 21,
2019, at The Arbors in Shelburne, VT. Born to the late Ethel and Norton Buck on September 16, 1945,
Carolyn (Buck) Bird was raised in Dannemora, NY. After high school, Carolyn attended SUNY Canton
and went on to work for over 30 years at Plattsburgh State University where she was an important
part of the Center For Lifelong Learning.
Carolyn was a creative soul. She dabbled in countless forms of art -- stained glass, drawing,
cross-stitch, ceramics and, the passion of her later adult years, quilting. Carolyn (much like her
mother before her) loved going for an early morning walk and was often known to rise at “O’
dark-thirty.” Carolyn also had a green thumb and every window sill in her home was full of as
many plants as she could fit. Her greatest joy, and perhaps her greatest talent, was holding a
baby. Many-a-baby expressed their first big belly laughs in response to the entertainment she
would provide.
Carolyn found peace and joy in her Catholic faith and was often reading books to enrich her
spiritual growth. All whom loved her will remember her strong work ethic, tenacity and her
contagious laughter.
Carolyn married Robert. D Bird in 1971 and often joked that with their Buck/Bird last names
they created the Wild Kingdom! They spent their years raising a family in Cadyville as they
worked on fixing up their “dream” home, an old stone house built in the 1700s. Bob
pre-deceased her just a few months shy of their 40th wedding anniversary.
Carolyn was Mom to Meeghan Bird Matarazzo and her husband TJ, Briana Bird, and Brandon
Bird. She was an adored Grammie to Lucia, Rafaella, Amadeo, and Pio. Carolyn was also Dear
sister of Mary Anne Binger, Arlene Patnode and her husband Ronald, Patricia Goddeau and her
husband Allen, and Donald Buck (pre-deceased) and his wife Brenda. Carolyn was also well
loved by her brothers and sisters-in-law. She was Aunt Carolyn to many beloved nieces and
nephews.
The family wishes to thank the amazing staff at The Arbors for their loving and compassionate
care of Carolyn. Amidst the devastation of dementia, they provided joy and comfort.
