Altona Casper O. Barcomb, 86, of Miner Farm Road, passed away Monday, September 22, 2008 at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, surrounded by his family. He was born in Mooers Forks on December 21, 1921, son of the late Delore and Evone (Poissant) Barcomb. Casper was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II. Previous to enlisting, Casper worked on the family farm with his father and brothers. He was a founding member of the Altona Volunteer Fire Department, a former Fire Chief and a former Fire Commissioner. Casper was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1418 in Champlain, American Legion Post # 912 in Champlain, Knights of Columbus Council # 6367 in Mooers. He was a member of Altona Senior Citizens and a communicant of Holy Angel's Church in Altona. Casper was fondly known as Poppa. He loved to cook and to garden. Casper was a very quiet man who loved to make his friends and family smile. Casper was employed by Georgia Pacific, retiring after thirty nine and ½ years in 1987. When he was in the U.S. Army, he was promoted to Sgt., serving in Europe. For over fifty six years, Casper and his wife Doris have shared their lives and created a home and family in the small town of Altona. The love of their family, friends and neighbors have kept them tied to this community, sharing and creating many memories over the years. They have become one of the many senior citizen couples to enjoy the benefits of small town living. Casper was an active volunteer, always lending a helping hand in community functions or helping a neighbor. Casper is survived by his wife, Doris (Boyea) Barcomb of Altona, they were married on August 23, 1952 at Holy Angel's Church in Altona by Rev. Patrick Thompson, a daughter, Shelly Toohill and her husband, John of Plattsburgh, a grandson, Jesse Toohill of Plattsburgh who was the apple of his Poppa's eye, sisters in law and brothers in law, Luella Barcomb of Charlotte, North Carolina, Bernice Barcomb of Champlain, Regina Barcomb of Mooers Forks, Olga LaPierre of Plattsburgh, Pearl and Leonard Lashway of Ellenburg Depot, Curtis and Rebecca Boyea of Altona, Douglas and Mary Boyea of Altona, several special nieces, nephews and cousins. Casper was pre-deceased by his parents, Delore and Evone (Poissant) Barcomb, brothers, Leo, Roland, and Ernest, a sister, Clarice Raymond and three infant sisters. Calling hours will be Thursday, September 25, 2008 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Brown Funeral Home, 3123 Miner Farm Road, Altona. Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will meet Thursday evening at 7:30, members of the Knights of Columbus will meet Thursday evening at 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, September 26, 2008 at 11:00 AM from Holy Angel's Church in Altona. Burial will follow in Holy Angel's Cemetery in Altona. Donations in the memory of Casper O. Barcomb may be made to Altona Volunteer Fire Department and the Holy Angel's Church Building Fund or for Masses in his memory. The family would like to thank the staff and physicians of CVPH Medical Center who assisted in his care, especially Dr. DeLucas, Dr. Griffin, Dr. Vacarro, Dr. Garrand and Dr. Banko., also a special thank you to his special neighbors who gave so much care to Casper, Wayne and Jeannette LaBarge, Jamie and Leslie LaBarge and Ellen Montgomery.
