Saranac Mr. Clement G. "Jerry" Doherty, Jr., 72, of the Chazy Lake Road, Saranac, New York passed into the hands of the Lord Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at the CVPH Medical Center with his family by his side after a long and courageous illness. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts o May 18, 1937 the son of Clement and Emma (Moore) Doherty, Sr. Jerry was educated in catholic schools in the Boston area. After graduation he joined the U. S. Air Force where he proudly served for 20 years. After retirement, he worked at the Base Exchange until entering New York Corrections in 1979. He worked for 20 years retiring in 1999. After retiring from Department of Corrections, he worked as a substitute teacher in local schools and volunteered reading at Assumption of Mary School. He earned two college degrees after retiring from the service. Jerry taught introduction to criminal justice at Clinton Community College for many years. He also was Santa in the North Country for 20 years. Jerry is a member of the American Legion Post #1618, the Dannemora Knights of Columbus Council, the Church of the Assumption, Redford where he served as Eucharistic Minister and Lector. Jerry is survived by the love of his life Bernice (Light) Doherty whom he married June 25, 1959. He always remembered the day they met March 13, 1959 and never failed to surprise her with a gift and token of his love on this day. Jerry is also survived by his four children, Tim Doherty and his wife Jean, Jeanine Perkins and her husband Bill, Kevin Doherty and his wife Cheryl, and David Doherty. He was a wonderful Dad who instilled a love of reading to his children and grandchildren. Jerry is survived by his brother Joseph Doherty, a sister Jane Burke and her husband Jack, a sister-in-law Terry Doherty and a brother-in-law Fred Butterworth, his grandchildren, great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Jerry was predeceased by his parents, a brother Henry Doherty and sisters Rita Cadegan and her husband James and Bette Butterworth. Calling hours will be Friday, February 19, 2010 from 2-4 and 6-8 at the Brown Funeral Home, 3 Park Row, Cadyville, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Church of the Assumption, Redford, New York. Interment will be at a later date at St. James Cemetery, Cadyville. Due to allergies, the family requests NO FLOWERS. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association or Diabetes Foundation.
