Col Christopher J Munn

Col. Christopher J. Munn, Ret., 62, of Route 9, Peru, NY, passed away on Sunday January 26, 2020 at his home with his family by his side under the care of Hospice of the North Country after a long battle with ALS since 2013. He was born in Harlingen, TX on December 7, 1957 the son of Robert and Patricia (Foley) Munn, while his father served in the United States Air Force. Chris graduated from St. John’s Academy in 1975; he then attended Clinton Community College until enrolling at Norwich University in Northfield Vermont, graduating 1981. After graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. He married Tammy Barber on November 21, 1981 at St. John’s Church in Plattsburgh. Chris and his family traveled throughout the United States and Germany, where he was stationed. He was deployed to Somalia, Haiti and two tours in Bosnia. Chris was honorably discharged after 25 years of service to his country. He was a member of St. John’s Church and the Friday Hiking Club. Chris coached his children in soccer, hockey and lacrosse. He enjoyed back country skiing, wild ice skating, biking, football, hockey and Norwich Rugby.
In 2014, Chris’s rugby friends wanted to do something in Chris’s honor, to show their support of him through his journey with ALS. Their dedication lead to the creation of the Munn 7’s Rugby Tournament which raises ALS awareness and funds for a scholarship given to one male and one female student at Norwich University each year.
He was recognized by Norwich University in 2018 as the inaugural recipient of the NU2NU Award which recognizes significant impact through volunteer service within the Norwich Community.
Chris was predeceased by his parents and his father-in-law Wilmer Barber. He is survived by his wife of 38 years Tammy, their children, Ryan Munn of Peru and Christopher Munn, Jr. of Peru, and his chocolate lab Foley; his siblings Maureen Condon and her husband Don of Shelburne, VT; Matthew Munn and his wife Julia of Morrisonville, NY; Lisa Wells of Plattsburgh; Robert Munn Jr and his wife Juliet of Chazy Lake, NY; Patrick Munn and his wife Diane of Saranac Lake, NY; Thomas Munn and his wife Karen of Williston, VT; Rebecca Danis and her husband Mark of Yellow Springs, OH; Richard Munn and his wife Michele of Plattsburgh; Adam Munn and his wife Karin of Colorado Springs, CO; and Daniel Munn and his wife Amy of Saratoga Springs; his mother-in-law Jane Barber LaLonde and her husband Bill of Parishville, NY, his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Pam (John) O’Neill of Chateaugay, James (April) Barber of Dannemora and Mary (Tony) Tetreault of West Chazy, several nieces and nephews also survive him.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2020, from 4:00PM to 7:00PM at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 31, 2020 at 11:00AM at Saint John’s Church in Plattsburgh. Burial will be later in the year at Norwich University Cemetery in Northfield, Vermont. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be offered to Hospice of the North Country or The Brigid Project, P.O. Box 222, Saranac, New York, 12981.
