Dominick J. Camelo, Jr., 96, Plattsburgh, NY passed away on Wednesday October 18, 2017 at his home with his loving family by his side, under the care of Hospice of the North Country. He was born in Tupper Lake, NY on August 5, 1921 the son of Dominick and Maria (Tamasi) Camelo, Sr. Dominick graduated from Holy Ghost Academy in 1939. He served his country during World War II in the U. S. Army Signal Corps from 1942 to 1946, where he was stationed in the Philippines Islands and Japan. After being honorably discharged he returned to Tupper Lake where he worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital. He married the love of his life Helen Finegan at St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake on June 30, 1951 by Fr. Peter Ward. He transferred in 1955 to Plattsburgh Air Force Base, retiring in 1974 after 33 years of Federal Service. Dominick then went on to work as a bookkeeper for Theodore Stay & Sons, until retiring in 1988. Dominick enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, sharing his Italian heritage with his family and friends and traveling with his wife Helen especially to Italy and Ireland. He also enjoyed golfing, bocci, pinochle and watching Yankee Baseball. He was a member of Eugene G. Santor Knights of Columbus Council 4689, Keeseville Elks Lodge 1458, National Association of Federal Employees, Past President of the Italian American Club of the North Country, Former Treasurer of the Our Lady of Grace Academy in Keeseville, American Association of Retired Persons, Sons of Italy Lodge in Myrtle Beach, American Legion Post 20, American Italian Heritage Association, past member of the Seton Catholic School Board, Keeseville Little League Coach and volunteered at CVPH Medical Center. Dominick and Helen would spend their summers in Plattsburgh and winters in Myrtle Beach where they made many wonderful friends. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife of 60 years Helen, sister; Florentine Camelo, sisters-in-law Evelyn Camelo, Mary Finegan, Vera Finegan and a brother-in-law Richard Finegan. Dominick is survived by three children; Maureen Camelo-Whiting of Queensbury, Gregory Camelo of Queensbury and Dr. Kathleen Camelo of Plattsburgh, six grandchildren; Cari Whiting-Shiel and her husband Brenden, Joseph Whiting and his companion Erin Cubley, Michael Whiting and his fiancé Sally Sutton, Kevin Whiting and his wife Lynsey, Maria Bosford and her husband Dean and Kendrick Buchala, five great grandchildren; Noah and Isabella Shiel, Jonah Whiting and Alana and Gregory Bosford, a brother Frank Camelo, a brother-in-law John Finegan, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Dominick's family wishes to thank also of those cared for him especially Dolores Warren, who cared for him for over three years, Judd Collier, Brittany Sprague and his special friends Michael Parsons and Christopher Santa. Calling hours will be held on Sunday October 22, 2017 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday October 23, 2017 at 10:30 am at Saint John XXIII Newman Center in Plattsburgh, burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery in Keeseville. Donations in his memory may be made to The North Country Honor Flight or Hospice of the North Country.
