Douglas Duprey, 92, formerly of Mooers, NY and most recently the Samuel F. Vilas Home in Plattsburgh, NY passed away Thursday, February 10, 2022 at the CVPH Medical Center. He was born in Mooers, NY on February 3, 1930, the son of William J. and Clara M. (Higgins) Duprey.
Doug was a veteran of the army and served as a radio operator in the Korean Conflict as Private First Class, from 1949 to 1951. After leaving the army, he was employed at his brother’s business, Duprey’s Sawmill, becoming a partner and building the company into the north-country staple, Duprey Brothers Lumber and Building Supplies on Campground Road in Mooers. It subsequently became Duprey Lumber, and he sold the business in 1989, allowing him to enjoy his many pastimes. He was a third degree in the Knights of Columbus Council in Champlain, frequently working the Bingo nights and suppers, and was often the winner in their Pinochle tournaments. He was a very active member of the American Legion Post in Mooers, serving as Post Commander and chairman of the Birthday Calendar project and receiving the honor of Clinton County Legionnaire of the Year in 1972. Always the hard worker, he spent many hours carrying boxes for the Mooers Wesleyan Food Pantry and loading items for St. Mary’s Mission Center in Champlain. He was a proud participant in the North Country Honor Flight in 2015, flying to Washington, DC to visit the Korean War Memorial on the National Mall. Always a huge sports fan, Doug was fortunate to attend two Olympics (Montreal in 1976 and Lake Placid in 1980) as well as many games of the Montreal Canadiens and his beloved Montreal Expos. He loved travel, taking trips to the Canadian Maritimes and the Four-Corner area of the Southwest, as well as cruising on the Mediterranean, through Alaska, and around Scandinavia. An avid berry-picker, he also enjoyed long walks and spending time cheering on the pursuits of his grandchildren, whether it was cross-country running, band concerts, musical theater, or ballet.
Doug is survived by his wife of 66 years, Olivette (Lavalley) Duprey of Plattsburgh; his daughters, Maryanne Ellsworth and husband Bill, of Plattsburgh, and Nancy Duprey of Lunenburg, MA; his sister, Viola Hawkins of Hemmingford, Quebec; five grandchildren, David Ellsworth and wife, Fabiany, of Plattsburgh, Brian Ellsworth of Plattsburgh, Rachel Giggey and husband, Matthew, of Reading, MA, Nicole Brooks and husband, Danny, of Wilmot, NH, and Stephen Koehler of Middletown, CT; along with cherished nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and his siblings; Edward (1994), Ernest (2005), Rose (1922) and Clarence (1998).
The Calling Hours and the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Ann’s Church in Mooers Forks will be limited to family and close friends.
Interment with military honors, as well as a Celebration of Life, will be held later in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Mooers Wesleyan Food Pantry, 149 Maple Street, Mooers NY 12958 or St. Mary’s Mission Center, 88 Oak Street, Champlain, NY 12919.
