Dr. Joanne Glasgow, 73, of Chazy Lake, NY passed away on July 7, 2017 at Champlain Valley Physician's Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Joanne was born on August 7, 1943 in Lincoln, Nrbraska. The daughter of John Paul Glasgow and Lydia Mae (Wheeler) Glasgow, she grew up in Dannemora, NY and on Cumberland Head, Plattsburgh, NY. She attended school in Dannemora and graduated from St. John's Academy in Plattsburgh where she was Valedictorian. She married Terrance Duval on July 10, 1965. Her many degrees include a Bachelor's degree in English from the College of New Rochelle, where she earned the highest academic award the college offered - the Gold Fourragere, a Master's degree in English as a Second Language from the State University College at Plattsburgh, and two Doctorate degrees from Fordham University, the first in English and the second in Theology. Early in her career, Joanne worked as a reporter for the Plattsburgh Press Republican. She also taught at Beekmantown Central Schools and Saranac Central Schools before accepting a position as a teacher of English at Fordham University. Her teaching career culminated as a Professor of English at Bergen Community College in New Jersey, where she also taught Women's Studies and Religion. Among her many professional accomplishments, Joanne authored several books related to these topics. She retired as Professor Emerita from Bergen Community College and then returned to her beloved mountains on Chazy Lake, NY. Joanne was a voracious reader who loved the outdoors, tennis, kayaking, and classical music. She recently shared fond memories of her world travels, including a trip to Scotland - her favorite country. She was known for her love for crossword puzzles and acrostics and was a dynamic leader in her local book club. She also served on the Dannemora Town Board and the Dannemora Library Board. Joanne was pre-deceased by her parents, her brother Col. Jack Glasgow, and sister Mary Glasgow. She is survived by her brother Tom Glasgow, and sister Patricia Moell; her children: Michele Lynne (Andrew) O'Connor, Danielle Rene (Dominic) Potenza, Geoffrey Duval and his companion Gloria Zuclich; her grandchildren: Alexandra, David, and Ian O'Connor, Michael Duval; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 14th from 6:00pm- 9:00pm at the Brown Funeral Home located at 29 Broad St., Plattsburgh, NY 12901. Mass will be held at 10:00am on July 15th at St. Joseph's Church in Dannemora, located at 179 Smith St., Dannemora, NY 12929. Burial and reception will follow. Donations may be made in her memory to the Dannemora Free Public Library located at 40 Emmons St, Dannemora, NY, PO Box 730.
