Eleanor A Dowdle

Eleanor A. Dowdle, 94, of Plattsburgh and formerly of Dannemora passed away Thursday, October 13, 2022 at Elderwood of Uihlein in Lake Placid. She was born in Dannemora on May 1, 1928, the only child of Matthew and Agnes (Drollette) Wardell.

Raised in her beloved hometown of Dannemora she remained there until the Ice Storm of 1998 when she and James sold their house and moved to Erin Court in Plattsburgh until his death on August 18, 2012 after 64 years of marriage. Eleanor went on to live at Victory Place, the Villas Home, Keene Valley Neighborhood House and for the past few months, Elderwood of Lake Placid.

“Miss Ellie” was a Dannemora High School graduate, as well as the Plattsburgh Business Institute. Following employment at Ames Furniture Store, she began her career at Clinton Prison, retiring in 1979 as the Sr. Principal Personnel Clerk.

Eleanor was predeceased by her half-brothers, Elmer (Florence) Gagnier, Kenneth (Mary) Gonyea, Harry (Julia) Gagnier and her half-sister, Esther (Ralph) Wolcott and a daughter-in-law Melanie “Mel” Dowdle.

She is survived by two sons; James (Lisa) Dowdle of Plattsburgh, Dale (Kim) Dowdle all of Plattsburgh, five grandchildren; Rebecca (Mario) Gomes, Alison (Jordan) Rodriguez, William (Stacy) Dowdle, James Dowdle and Hillary Dowdle, six great grandchildren; she thought she’d never have! Also a longtime friend Veronica (Ronnie) Rothermel, several nieces and nephews also survive her.

Ellie will be remembered for love of family, marvelous sense of humor, caring for her home, crafts, flower gardens, travelling to England, seeing her father’s homeland.

Calling hours will be Sunday October 16, 2022 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St .in Plattsburgh.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday October 18, 2022 at Noon at St. Joseph’s Church in Dannemora. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the Dannemora Fire Dept.
