Ellen Hewett Heyman, 92, formerly of Cumberland Avenue, Plattsburgh, NY, passed away
peacefully on Thursday, August 26, 2021, at Champlain Valley Senior Community in Willsboro,
NY.
Ellen was born in New York, NY, on March 8, 1929, the daughter of Louis and Hilda Hewett.
She attended the High School of Music and Art in the borough of Manhattan, then earning a
Bachelor of Fine Arts from George Washington University in Washington, DC.
Ellen began her career as a textile stylist and designer in New York City. She married Samuel
Heyman on March 21, 1954. Sam and Ellen lived in New York City until 1959, when they moved
to Plattsburgh.
Ellen was an accomplished artist, professor, and dedicated volunteer. She earned a master’s
degree from Plattsburgh State University and began teaching, first in city schools and then at
Clinton Community College. As a professor, Ellen taught painting and art history. She
expanded her students’ horizons by leading trips to Montreal, New York, and abroad. Ellen held
art exhibitions highlighting watercolor landscapes and paintings of her travels, one of her
passions. She also served as a docent at the Kent Delord House.
More than anything, Ellen loved her family. She is survived by her sons Richard and Tony.
Richard and his wife Betsy have two children, Matthew (Lauren Black) and Chloe. Tony and his
wife Terese have three children, Allison, Samantha, and Anthony Jr.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband Sam and her son Charles Douglas.
A graveside service for Ellen is scheduled on Sunday, October 3, 2021, at 1:30 PM at Temple
Beth Israel Cemetery on Main Mill Street, Plattsburgh, NY.
