Plattsburgh Fred S. Rabideau, 83, of Route 22 Plattsburgh, NY passed away on Friday November 6, 2009 at his home with his family by his side under the care of Hospice of the North Country. He was born in Altona, NY on September 25, 1926 the son of George and Agnes (Clark) Rabideau. Fred joined the United States Navy in November of 1943 at the age of seventeen. He proudly served his country during World War II in the Pacific Theater with the LST 719. He later served in both the Korean War and Vietnam War and was a Recruit Company Commander in San Diego, retiring in 1968 as a Chief Petty Officer with several medals and honors, including a Bronze Star. Fred was a member of the American Legion Post 20 Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 125 and Fleet Reserve Association. After retiring he moved back to Plattsburgh, where he had several jobs over the years including; Montgomery Wards, Merkel's Department Store and Keeseville Auto Parts. Fred enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially horse racing. He was known for his gardening, cooking and making fudge. Fred also enjoyed keeping in touch with his World War II buddies and going to Navy Ship Reunions all over the country. He had a great love of animals and caring for his dogs and cats; Dreyfus, Homer, Smokey and Muffy. He was predeceased by his parents; four sisters, Olive Ashline, Flora Columbe, Amelia St. John and Julia St. John, four brothers, William Rabideau, George, Rabideau, Robert Rabideau and Albert Rabideau. Fred is survived by his wife of 33 years, Margaret "Maggie" (Mitchell) Rabideau, three children; Robert Rabideau and his wife Stephanie of Plattsburgh, Michael Rabideau and his was wife Irma of Yokosuka, Japan and Patricia Pote and her husband Robert of Plattsburgh. Three grandchildren; Jerad Rabideau and his wife Jamie, Caitlin Rabideau and Kimberly Pote all of Plattsburgh, and a sister Bessie Spaulding of Millerton, NY. Several nieces and nephews also survive him. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday November 10, 2009 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday November 11, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in West Chazy. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu flowers donations in Fred's memory may be made to Hospice of the North Country, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, the Smile Train and the local animal shelters.
