Gladys M. Perry, 84, of Plattsburgh, passed away on Friday March 5, 2021 at her home surrounded by her loving family under the care of Hospice of the North Country. Gladys had a zest for life and loved her family and friends whole heartedly. She was born in Mooers Forks, NY on February 20, 1937 the daughter of Gilbert and Jessie (Yelle) Bobbie.
Gladys married Richard S. Perry on June 30, 1957 at St. Peter and Paul Church in Mineville, NY. She worked various jobs over the years, beginning at Monty Street School in Plattsburgh. Gladys then went on to work for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Plattsburgh as the Regional Director. Later she began working for JCEO and then the Clinton County Board of Elections. Gladys was appointed June 9, 1993 to finish out her husband Richard’s term as County Legislator and continued to serve for a number of years. Her last job was as an Ambassador for American Greeting Cards.
Gladys owned several businesses over the years including; Mr. Sub, Jack and Jill Hair Salon and Downtown Deli and News.
She was very active in the community, volunteering as a Cheerleading Coach and a Bingo Director at MAI, Chairperson of the Plattsburgh Housing Authority Board of Directors, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society and Democratic Committee Chairperson. Gladys later became the regional director for Jerry Lewis Telethons and fundraised for many non-profit organizations over the years.
Gladys was predeceased by her husband, parents; a great grandson, Corbyn Howard, her siblings; Ernest Bobbie, Robert Bobbie, Geraldine (Homer) Collins, Grace (Gig) Catanzarita, Flora (Bill) Conway, Elsie (Edmund) Trombley and Doris Bobbie, a sister-in-law Louise Bobbie, and her best fur baby Minnie “Moo Moo”.
She is survived by her children; Richard “Rick” (Sandra) Perry, Debbie (Carl) Walker, Tina (Bryan) Wallenhorst, Tami (Bill) Smith, seven grandchildren; Aimee (Ben) Arts, Jason (Jessica) Perry, Nick (Jenny) Walker, Nicole (Chad) Rowe, Kayla (Armand Remillard) Wallenhorst, Michael (Cheryl Brousseau) Howard, Cody (Katlyn) Howard, fifteen great grandchildren; Elias and Caiden Arts, Ava, Carter and Weston Perry, Sadie and Marlie Walker, Cooper and Charlee Rowe, Addison and Edward Howard, Madisyn, Coltyn, Eastyn and Gracelyn Howard, and her great grand fur babies Penelope and Lumiere, her siblings; Kenneth Bobbie, Catherine Baglyos, Gilbert (Gloria) Bobbie and a sister-in-law Joan Bobbie, several nieces and nephews as well as those she considered her extended family; Lisa Latour, Debbie Bouyea and Kathy Baker also survive her.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday March 16, 2021 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A funeral service will follow in the Brown Funeral Home Chapel; entombment will be at the Town of Plattsburgh Community Mausoleum.
Gladys had a special place in her heart to help children in need, donations in her memory may be made to her daughter Tami Smith, C/O Brown Funeral Home, where donations will be directed to support the special education department at Momot Elementary School in Plattsburgh.
