It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Harold "Rebel" Hicks on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at his home with his loving family at his side. He was born in Verdonville, WV. On February 8, 1938 the son of George and Spicie (Mayhorn) Hicks. After high school Rebel joined the U.S. Air Force. He completed basic training and was assigned to the 380th Bomb Wing at Plattsburgh Air Force base. He was one of the first 75 men to arrive and paved the way for the others to follow and adjust to the facility. At that time Rebel met and married LaVerne Righi, daughter of Giordano and Laura Righi. After his discharge he was employed by the City of Plattsburgh. Rebel worked at the water treatment plant, later he was transferred to the Water and Sewer Department as a heavy equipment operator. Rebel was promoted to the Crete Center/Beach Complex as a foreman of the maintenance section. Leaving the Complex he was assigned to Public Works as a foreman/heavy equipment operator. With the retirement of Carl Parsons, Rebel became an assistant to Joseph Pelkey, Superintendent of Public Works. After the death of Mr. Pelkey and 32 ½ years of loyal service, Rebel retired. During his lifetime Rebel also ran a family business installing septic systems in the area, and snowplowing during the winter with the assistance of his wife and children. With his friend Henry Hart they replaced many water lines in family homes in the city. Rebel also became involved in City Politics for became Councilor in Ward 1. He always had an open door policy and a cup of coffee and any constituent who came over. Rebel enjoyed boating, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed hunting with his twin sons Jordon and Gordon, and two of his oldest grandsons John and Steven Coryea and many, many of his friends. Many trips were made to the Mountains in Keene and downstate with many trophies hanging on his wall at home as memories of good times. Rebel is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, LaVerne. His children: Tina (Coryea) Staves (Joseph), Giordano (Cheri), Laura (Perry) Buck, Jordon (Samantha), and Gordon (Ann) 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. A brother Larry Lusk (Judy), and a sister, Wilma Miller of Lorado, WV also a sister Patricia Mayerhofer (George) of New Glarus, WI also a dear and loving Uncle, Bill Duty of Harts, WV. He was predeceased by his mother, father and stepfather Noah Lusk, his in-laws, Giordano and Laura Righi, his son-in-law Gordon Coryea, his brother-in-law Leo (Tommy) Miller, a nephew Leo Miller Jr. and several Aunts, Uncle and cousins.
