Harriet L Jeweler

December 25, 1931 — April 16, 2023

Harriet Ann Larkin Jeweler, 91, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2023 after several years of enduring dementia and Alzheimer's Disease with the utmost grace. Harriet was born December 25, 1931 in Washington, D.C. to William and Georgiena Larkin. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1950, Harriet worked for the US government as a civil servant. At her ten-year high school reunion, Harriet found love with her former high school friend, Stanley Jeweler. They married in 1960, moved to Bethesda, MD and raised two children, Gary Frederick and Dana Beth, while owning and operating Normandy Liquors in D.C.

In the years following Stan’s passing in 1972, Harriet worked for the Kelly Girl temp agency as an office assistant at the radio station WASH where she met Jay Morrill. Harriet and Jay, along with Gary and Dana, moved to Plattsburgh, NY, originally to buy the radio station WEAV but when the deal fell through, they decided to stay in the area and get married. They operated the Cumberland Head Ferry dock snack bar in the summer of 1976 then decided to buy the old ARCO gas station on the corner of Broad and Peru Streets. They worked their magic and used their incredible imaginations to create the Tijuana Jail, a popular Mexican restaurant that left an indelible mark on the Plattsburgh community. Everyone remembers Harriet as part of that delicious experience to this day. The doors opened December 15, 1977 and was operated by the pair until their divorce in March 1990. Harriet decided it was time for a change of pace and went on to work at Mountain Lake PBS as their Volunteer Coordinator and started her own volunteer journey at UVM Health Network-CVPH that would last for the next 25 years. She became an avid volunteer, also helping Literacy Volunteers, and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), both with tax services and with teaching aerobics to seniors with osteoporosis. Harriet found companionship again with the fun and adventurous artist, Dr. Edgar Barton, with whom she spent several of her golden years until his passing in 2006.

Harriet was predeceased by her husbands, her companion, her parents, and her beloved sisters, Joy (Chet) Cavaliere and Jean (John) Nieman. She is survived by her son, Gary Jeweler, her daughter-in-law, Alaine Nijenhuis, her daughter, Dana Jeweler (Adrian Carr), her grandchildren Mia (David) Young, Amy (Ricky) Reil, Adam (Kiley) Knef, Ben Jeweler, and Abby Jeweler, her bonus granddaughter, Kt Teaney, her seven great-grandchildren, Z and Kellen Young, Jace, Ellie and Aila Reil, Jonah and Oliver Knef, several nieces and nephews, cousins and a great many friends.

Harriet’s family would like to thank her wonderful caregivers, Sodie Bombard, Angeline Trost, Shawntel Hayes, Penny Clarke, Terry Reil and many others for becoming family and providing Harriet with love, care and comfort in her final years. She was eased through these last months under the expert care and tender guidance of Hospice of the North Country with love from Katie LaPage White, Heather Newell, and many others.

In lieu of flowers, Harriet’s family requests donations made to Hospice of the North Country, The Foundation of CVPH, Lake Forest Retirement Community or Mountain Lake PBS in her honor.

A wake will be held at Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad Street, Plattsburgh, New York 12901 on Friday, April 21st from 4pm-7pm with a celebration of her life at a later date.
