Helen J Colver

d. October 24, 2013

It is still with great sadness, that a year later we detail for you the life and death of an exceedingly good person, our mother Helen Colver on October 24, 2013. To have known Helen was to have known an exceptionally kind and loving woman. She was blessed with the gift of compassion and curiosity for all things natural. She loved all creatures and would protect even the smallest. When once a bee was in peril while sitting on her gazebo she lovingly reminded, "They are god's creatures too." Thus the bee lived to pollinate another flower. Helen was an artist. She was well known for her exceptional water colors that hang in many homes, businesses, and libraries both in New York and Wisconsin. She was a life long member of the Adirondack Mountain Club. An avid hiker and climber she was a challenge to keep up with. Mom cross country skied long before it was a popular sport. She carried spare ski tips in her pack in case needed, for she loved to "shuush" down a steep slope. Often times she would ski ahead and leave arrows made of sticks marking her way. Eventually, she would be found with a hot cup of tea waiting. Mom knew and loved the Adirondack Mountains, often wishing she could have been an Adirondack guide. In truth, she was a guide, for she delighted in showing her favorite spots no matter how remote. We thank our mother for giving her children the gift and love nature. For we, in turn, have passed it on to our children. Helen married John Colver in the 1975. John was the love of her life. They traveled the world, including trips to Russia, Europe, and Central America. They skied, hiked, gardened, and both were avid readers. Both Helen and John were active members in many clubs and civic organizations. There is no need to list them all. They were proud of Plattsburgh and returned their devotion back to the community. To have know Helen would have been to know she was a quiet inspiration to many. Mom showed bravery and grace as she faced an insurmountable mountain when given the diagnose of ALS. She climbed that mountain with grace and dignity. She had an endearing way about her that will be impossible for those who knew and loved her to forget. So it is on this one year anniversary that we tell the story of a good, kind and courageous woman. It is on this day that you should know mom, that you will always be missed. By both your family and friends. Thank you mom for all that you gave to us. Your children, grandchildren and friends miss you deeply. Thank you Hospice of the North Country for seeing us through this most difficult time. To those that read this please hug someone you love today. Offer a small act of kindness to a stranger.
