Helga M. Petropoulos, 89, passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at Plattsburgh Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Formerly of Irondequoit, N.Y. and Wildflower Lane, Morrisonville, N.Y., Helga most recently resided on Hank Wilson Road in Cadyville, N.Y. with her daughter. Helga was born in Hamburg, Germany, on May 27, 1934, daughter of the late Hermann Alfred and Trinchen Marie (von Borstel) Peter. Helga came to the United States when she was 18, under the sponsorship of her aunt, Bertha Roessler, and later became a U.S. citizen. After learning English, she earned a degree in business administration from Cazenovia College, and went to work in the library of Eastman Kodak, where she met her husband, Michael (Mike) C. Petropoulos. They were married 47 years at the time of Mike’s passing in 2008. Helga was a member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church in Rochester. She was an accomplished seamstress, enjoyed gardening, flower arranging, and tending plants. She was a loving wife and mother. Helga is survived by her two daughters, Anne Stephens and her husband Randy of Douglasville, Georgia, Laura Hilpl and her husband Sean of Cadyville, New York; and grandchildren, Christopher Stephens, Evelyn Stephens, Marie Phillips and her husband Brad, and Rebekah Hilpl; and great-grandchild, Jayce Phillips. She is also survived by her sister, Lydia Peter Tuczynski and half-brother, Hilmar Heiner Behnke, both of Hamburg, Germany. Donations in Helga’s memory may be made to Hospice of the North Country, 358 Tom Miller Rd, Plattsburgh, NY 12901 or Ascent Care 20 Academy St. Saranac Lake NY 12983. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad Street, Plattsburgh, N.Y.
