Hortense H. "Hope" (Miller) Smart, 82, of the Duley Road, Altona, New York passed away on Friday November 2, 2018 at Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh. She was born in Ellenburg Depot, NY on November 24, 1935 the daughter of Emmett and Emma (Cayea) Miller. She married Carlton Smart in October 1954. Hope enjoyed spending time with her friends at the Ganienkeh BINGO Hall. She worked as a bus driver for Northern Adirondack Central School, at Clinton Community College as a switchboard operator and retired from Clinton County Youth Bureau. She also enjoyed caring for her many pets over the years, her last being her cat "Smokey." Hope was predeceased by her parents ,by her ex-husband Carlton in 1998, a son Dwight in 2013, her brothers Leonard, Lawrence, Leo and Gaylord Miller; sisters; Irene DuBrey, Eva Christiansen, Ida DeFayette, Loretta Desmarais and Velma Bonneau. She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Layhee and her husband Richard of Dannemora, two sons; Dwayne Smart and his wife Melanie of Altona, David Smart and his wife Kelly of Altona, a daughter-in-law Jackie Burrell-Smart of Florida, her brother Lyman "Gilbert" Miller and his wife Shirley of Chazy Lake, six grandchildren; Shannon (Michael) McGill, Darcy (David) Waldron, Shawn (Kelly) Smart, Jason Smart, Brady (Taylor Hadley) Smart and Lucas Smart. Also surviving her are great-grandchildren; Jack and Sullivan McGill, Jacoby Waldron, Bella, Cooper and Colton Smart, Nicholas Smart and great-granddaughter, Nora Waldron due in February 2019. Hope is also survived by three step-granddaughters; Michelle (Emmett) Drollette, Frances (Scott) Minckler and Rebecca (Andre) Chauvin and eleven step-great grandchildren; Alec and Reese Carr, Aidan and Liam Drollette, Montana, Hailee and Zachary Minckler, Thomas Ketchum and Kellen, Wyatt and Belle Chauvin. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive her. In lieu of flowers donations in Hope's memory may be made to Altona Fire Dept. and Elmore SPCA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday November 7, 2018 at 10:30 am at Holy Angels Church in Altona, NY. Interment will follow at Holy Angels Cemetery.
