Howard “Duke” C. Miller, Jr., PhD, of Elizabeth St., Plattsburgh passed away peacefully on September 17, 2019 at UVMHN-CVPH Medical Center with his family and wonderful staff of comfort care by his side. He was born in Latham, NY on March 18, 1932 to Howard C. Miller Sr., and Pearl (Weaver) Miller.
He graduated from Gloversville High School and furthered his education at Union College and went on to get his Doctorate from Lehigh University in English and Poetry. After graduation he had a long and distinguished career teaching at SUNY Plattsburgh for forty years where he was involved in many committees throughout his career.
We can picture him now…bowling at North Bowl Lanes, fishing at Marine Village, sitting in the Adirondack chair at Talcott in hope that Guinness wouldn’t send him into the lake. He enjoyed writing articles for his grandson Jason’s Clifton Commentator, dancing with grandson Josh and great grandson Gunnar to “Jerimiah was a Bullfrog”, teaching his grandson Ryan “Puff the Magic Dragon” on the piano and hand written snail mail with his grandson Kelly from Spain. Duke composed countless “Letters to the Editor” expressing his opinions that remain unpublished.
He is survived by his wife Myrna (Wrisley) Miller, son Calvin (Kathy) and daughter Jennifer (David) Baker, his grandchildren; Jason (Jenn), Ryan (Kendra), Kelly (Elena) Miller, Joshua (Christina) Baker, his great grandchildren, Olivia, Jackson, Aidan, Isabella, Warren, Clara-Miller, and Gunnar Baker; sister, Vrenda Marshall, two nephews that were like sons to Duke Paul and Howie Dingman . On August 21, 1989, he became father to Myrna’s children, Loren (Terry), Brian and Lori (Ray) ,his grandchildren; Matt (Amy), Emily (Andy), Tamara (Rusty), Kaitlyn Wrisley, Chris (Toni), Erin (Jerry); great grandchildren, Audrey, Lily, Ava, Elsie, Adeline, Levi, Haley, Calvary, and Rayya .
He was predeceased by his larger than life first wife, Bernie Kucel Miller, grandson Jonathan Lee Miller, sister Ruth Ellen Hawley and daughter Kim Wrisley Chase.
A celebration if his life will be Friday, September20, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the CVPH Medical Center Foundation.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad Street, Plattsburgh, NY 12901.
