James “Red” Richard Cody, 83, of Seymour Road, West Chazy, NY, passed away on Saturday February 20, 2021 at UVHN: CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was born in Plattsburgh on August 15, 1937 the son of Walter and Jennie (Chamberlin) Cody.
James served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1957, after being honorably discharged he returned to Plattsburgh where he worked at Morrisonville Construction serving as President. He later went on to own and operate Cody’s Grocery on Military Turnpike in West Chazy for 35 years. Many of his customers will remember all he did for them during the Ice Storm of 1998, keeping the store going on with generators to provide for his neighbors. James enjoyed spending time at camp where he would go hunting and fishing. He also donated to several school programs and snowmobile clubs over the years. He restored John Deere tractors as well in is free time. James married Cheryl David on January 23, 2015
He is survived by his wife Cheryl David-Cody, his daughters; Jean Cody Miller and Debra Sutphen, his grandchildren; Scott Miller, Kasey Kusalonis, great-granddchildren: Baylie-Anne and Odin Miller, Gavin and Payten Kusalonis, his siblings; Florence “Midge” Lecuyer and Pearl Sorrell, several nieces and nephews also survive him. He was predeceased by his parents, the mother of his children Doris Cody, his son, James W. Cody, his grandson Keith Cody, and his son-in-law, Terry Sutphen, his siblings; Mable Crossley, Frank Cody and Louis Cody.
Calling hours will be from 2:00-4:30 pm on Thursday, February 25, 2020 at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A funeral service will follow at 4:30pm in the Brown Funeral Home Chapel with military honors. Entombment will be in the Town of Ellenburg Mausoleum.
