Jane Devlin Lanigan passed away peacefully at her home with her loving family by her side. Jane was the daughter of John Francis Devlin and Bertha Theresa Jacques. Jane led a graceful, thoughtful and faith filled life calling Plattsburgh and the near vicinity home for all her years. Jane was a devoted wife to her husband David, who predeceased her in 2001. Together they shared nearly 53 years and nurtured a family of four. Family and faith was the core of their lives and the gifts of love and family will be cherished by all.
Jane’s devotion to family was enriched by her faith and her close ties to St John’s Catholic Church and the priests and Sisters of Mercy who were such steadfast and strong influences during her entire life. For a number of her very young years Jane lived with the Sisters of Mercy at St John’s Academy. These sisters were her extended family in many ways and she maintained lifelong friendships with many. St John,s parish was her faith home and the priests at the parish were also true extended family and friends throughout her life. The birthday celebrations she prepared for her friends were both fun and elegant.
Jane worked for nearly five decades at National Commercial Bank, now Key Bank. It delighted her to be remembered by someone who would mention and remember her as the person who helped to open their first savings account. She held positions from assistant to the bank president to teller or loan officer and was noted for her discretion and willingness to help.
Perhaps because Jane experienced poverty in her life as a child of The Depression and a young woman during WWII, festivities were important to Jane and every birthday was remembered with thoughtfulness. Christmas extended all year because she was ever alert to gifts which might be perfect for a loved one. Her generosity is an example to us all. One of the most touching practices was shopping for Birthright. She believed that every new baby deserved something new and special and would purchase and deliver beautiful new baby items for babies in need.
Jane is survived by her four children: Karen Ann Larkin, her husband Randall , Maureen Jane Brown and her husband Lawrence of Nashville, Tennessee, John David Lanigan of Saranac Lake, And Christopher Lanigan and his wife, Trish, of Ellsworth, Maine.. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and fourteengreat-grandchildren,numerous nieces , nephews and cousins. Because deep friendships were very important toJane there are dear friends who also shared the joy of her being and the loss of Jane now. We are all grateful for the love we have seen through the years.
Jane loved fresh flowers and there were usually bouquets in the home, but at this time, we ask that, should you wish to acknowledge Jane, you do it in ways which spread life and love to your families and to those who may benefit from your generosity. Hospice of the North Country was so instrumental in the loving care needed in Jane’s passage. Make a gift to a Food Shelf or to faith community which enriches you and those you love. As our Father said so often, BE GOOD TO YOURSELVES. And to each other.
