Plattsburgh Mrs. Jane Gates Pearl, 74, of Champlain Drive, Plattsburgh, New York passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington, Vermont surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Huntington, New York on May 12, 1935 the daughter of Edward and Thelma (Thorne) Gates. Jane was a teacher at North Side Elementary School on Plattsburgh Air Force Base retiring in 1994 after 25 years of service. Jane enjoyed playing Bridge and was a member of the Mother's Club and the Wednesday Bridge Group at the Elks Club. She enjoyed painting, gardening, sewing, arts and crafts, swimming, golf, traveling; and she was a successful swim coach at St. John's High School. Jane was a member of the Willsboro Golf Club and was President of the Ladies League. She was member of St. John's Church where she served as Eucharistic Minister and was past president of the Rosary Altar Society. Jane was predeceased by her parents Edward and Thelma Gates, a grandson Thomas Byther, and a brother Donald Gates. She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Robert G. Pearl of Plattsburgh, whom she married June 28, 1958, at Mary Queen of Martyr Church, Centerport, Long Island. Jane is also survived by a son Joseph Pearl and his wife Tammy of Suffolk, Virginia, four daughters: Susan Byther and her husband Doug of Rockledge, Florida; Mary Beth Cain and her husband John of Landisville, Pennsylvania; JoAnne Snelson and her husband Franklin (Trip) of Jacksonville, Florida; Laurie Jane Pearl and her friend Kettrick O'Rourke of Clifton Park, New York; one brother Edward Gates and his wife Betty of Centerport, Long Island; eight grandchildren: Robert Byther, Christopher and Jennifer Cain, Tayler, Meghan and Lydia Pearl, Andrew and Sarah Snelson; three sisters-in-law: Cathy Gates of Shalotte, North Carolina; Dr. Agnes Pearl of Plattsburgh; Mary Margaret Ireland and her husband Donald of Plattsburgh; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Friday, August 21, 2009 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St., Plattsburgh, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John's Church. Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Members of the Rosary Altar Society are asked to meet Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home for services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association.
