Dr.Jerome Herbert Resnick
May 22, 1931 – May 2, 2021

Dr.Jerome Resnick died peacefully at home due to lymphoma and Parkinson's disease, at the age of 89.

Jerry was a city boy, born to Sydney and Mae and hailing from the Bronx, New York. After graduating from The Bronx High School of Science, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at New York University and his Doctorate of Optometry at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, Philadelphia. In 1955, with a desire to serve his country and see more of the world before settling into an optometric practice, he volunteered to join the U.S. Navy. He was commissioned for three years as an air intelligence officer, and ventured to many European countries and more distant locales such as Iceland and Morocco, instructing fellow officers how to identify enemy aircraft. After his tour in the military, he turned his gaze to a career in eye care. Startling his parents and sister Ruth, Jerry's compass led him to rural Upstate New York. He opened his office in the village of Keeseville, nestled between the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain. His office, flanked by Gary's Bar and Goodman's Diner on Front Street, attracted folks from Essex and Clinton counties.

With his steadfast assistant Ruth Doyle at his side, Jerry examined eyes and prescribed corrective lenses for three generations of patients over the course of 38 years. His many patients remember him for his skill, but perhaps mostly for his devotion to their care and his ever-present (and inescapable) humor.

In 1963, Jerome met Lillian, who was to be his love evermore. The couple made their home in Plattsburgh and provided an idyllic childhood for their son and daughter, Jeffrey and Wendy. Upon their father's shoulders they have climbed.

Jerry was passionate about nature, and often described it as a religious experience. For over 50 years he sailed with his family on Lake Champlain. Other family pursuits included hiking (most frequently on Poke O Moonshine) and downhill skiing at Whiteface Mountain and Paleface Ski Resort. He enjoyed listening to classical music, and perhaps his favorite work was Sibelius's Symphony number 2. He and Lil reveled in all the North Country had to offer. They enjoyed square dancing for many years. They attended concerts at the Meadowmount School of Music, Lewis, and frequented both the Depot Theater in Westport and the Pendragon Theatre in Saranac Lake.

Retirement allowed Jerry and Lil to stroll the beaches of Florida in winter, and travel extensively to national parks in both the U.S. and Canada. They also enjoyed many other destinations in the Caribbean and Europe. Recent years have seen Jerry and Lil gaming at Rummikub and Scrabble, and exploring at Point au Roche and The Plattsburgh City Beach along with Roxy, their rambunctious Jack Russell terrier-beagle.

Completing his 89-year odyssey, Jerry has furled the sails and set anchor for the last time. His cremated remains are to be interred at Temple Beth Israel Cemetery, Plattsburgh, where a memorial service will celebrate the husband and father who has unfailingly proved himself his wife’s life-long companion, and his children’s (and grandchildren’s) friend and mentor.

Jerry is survived by his wife Lil; two children, Jeffrey and Wendy; and four grandchildren.

The family thanks the wonderful care providers of Hospice of the North Country, and Dr. William Pelton for their heartfelt care.

A graveside memorial service will be held at the Jewish Cemetery on Main Mill Street, Plattsburgh at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 6, 2021. Please be masked and practice social distancing.
