Joan M. Carpenter, 91, of Turner Court passed away Wednesday July 24, 2019 at her home under the care of Hospice of the North Country with her loving family and caregivers by her side. She was born in Plattsburgh on May 15, 1928 the daughter of Edwin L. and Mae (Angell) Mead. Joan was a graduate of Plattsburgh High School Class of 1947 and Plattsburgh State University Class of 1951. She married Earl W. Carpenter on April 14, 1952. Forty years later they renewed their vows at St. John’s Church. They were married for sixty years, setting a stellar example of true love for their children and grandchildren to follow.
Joan and Earl enjoyed spending time with family, especially their grandchildren. Their favorite place was their camp on Lake Champlain, where family and friends gathered and were welcomed with open arms. Joan taught at Peru Central School and later worked at St. Peter’s School. She was a member of the Mother’s Club, St. John’s Athletic Association, St. John’s Church, Altar Rosary Society and the Catholic Daughters.
She was predeceased by her parents and her husband Earl.
Joan is survived by two sons; Michael (Mary Jo) Carpenter of Watertown, New York, James (Linda) Carpenter of Plattsburgh, three daughters; Penny (Larry) Converse of Plattsburgh, Joni-Jill (Fritz) Tobrocke of Plattsburgh, Jan (Kevin) Garrant of Savannah, Georgia, fourteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren, a sister-in-law Suzanne Conners of North Carolina, several nieces and nephews and a special friend Louise Bezio of Morrisonville.
Calling hours will be on Saturday, July 27, 2019 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home Plattsburgh.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, July 29, 2019 at 11:00 at St. John’s Church.
Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the North Country, Seton Booster Club or St. John’s Church.
Joan’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to her caregivers. She would not have been able to stay in her home without the love, compassion and superb care from her team of aides, who have become part of the Carpenter family. Amidst the devastation of dementia, they were a constant source of comfort and joy to “Nana” and her family.
