Joanna R. Boulé, 82, of McMartin Street, Plattsburgh, passed away on December 19, 2023 at her home. Joanna was born in New York City on December 12, 1941, the daughter of John H. Schoonmaker and Catherine Urell Schoonmaker. She attended Georgetown University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1963. It was at Georgetown that she met the love of her life, Dr. John R. Boulé. They were married in June 1963 and enjoyed forty-eight wonderful years of marriage until his passing in 2011. After spending years raising their six children, Joanna worked as the supervising nurse at the A.R.C. of Clinton County in Plattsburgh for almost twenty years. She went on to volunteer countless hours at the Senior Citizens Council. Joanna had a strong Catholic faith and lived a dignified life of service in accordance with her beliefs. She was, with her husband, a founding member of Champlain Valley Right to Life. She was also very active in Birthright as well as the Bereavement Committee and Pre-Cana at St. Peter’s Parish. Joanna enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. She was a world traveler, an avid reader, and cherished her twenty-two grandchildren. She loved long evenings around the dining room table with her loving family. Her grace and strength led the Boulé family for years. Joanna was also predeceased by her parents and her brother John Schoonmaker. She is survived by her six children and their families: Colonel John R. Boulé II of Red Bank, NJ, Lisa Boulé of Newtown, Ct. and their children Lisbeth (Marc), John and Thomas; Dr. Anne Marie (Boulé) Spear and her husband, Geoffrey of Peru, and their four children, Taylor (Katie), Ian, Samantha and Tanner; Christopher Boulé and his wife, Krista (Jock) of Plattsburgh and their three children, Georgia, Madeline and Charlotte; Rita J. Boulé and her partner, Susan Rosner of Columbia, Maryland, and their daughter, Bali; Dr. Mark Boulé and his wife, Catherine (Goodwin) of Syracuse and their five children, Julia, Jason, Matthew, Luke and Allison; and Dr. Michael Boulé and his wife Christine (Stuart) of Plattsburgh and their four children, Reilly (Anthony), Nathaniel, Abigail and Gillian. She was blessed with two great-grandchildren, Owen and Chloe Boulé. Joanna is also survived by her sisters Jeanne Marie Vlah and Jane Ann Disare (Richard). Calling hours will be held from 4-7 pm on January 2nd at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 am at St Peters Church on January 3rd. Internment will take place in the parish cemetery immediately following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Birthright, 50 Clinton Street, Plattsburgh in her honor.
