John C Brancato

John Carl Brancato, 92, longtime resident of Plattsburgh, passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at Elizabethtown Community Hospital after along decline.
Carl was born in New York City on October 23, 1930, the second of five children, to Gabriel and May (McGivney) Brancato. The family moved to Rosendale in the Hudson Valley in the early 1940s and he graduated from Kingston High School in 1948.
Carl married his high school sweetheart and became a Montgomery Ward store manager, moving to various towns in upstate New York and Vermont, eventually settling in Plattsburgh.
Carl stayed in Plattsburgh and developed his love for the North Country and the Adirondacks. He married Grace Ryan in 1963 and in 1966 became Urban Renewal Director and Community Development Coordinator for the City of Plattsburgh. He worked to improve the infrastructure and quality of life in the city for twenty years, retiring in 1986.
Carl enjoyed many years of retirement, working single handedly to build a driveway and patio at the family home on LyndeSt; and taking many hiking, canoeing and camping trips in the Adirondacks. A highlight was a family trip to Ireland, which included visiting his first cousins in Belfast and seeing the house inwhich his mother had grown up.
He is survived by his sisters Norine Marquette, of Uncasville,CT and Kathleen Evan, of Bethesda, MD; sister-in-law Carolyn Brancato, of Tillson; his daughter Carla, of Plattsburgh; sons Robert, of Plattsburgh, John (Thomas) of West Hartford, CT, and Alexander, of Fort Lauderdale; grandchildren Bryan Brancatoof Plattsburgh; Christopher (Paige) Brancato of Peru; Ian Campbell of Plattsburgh; , Aran and Maddalena Brancato of West Hartford, CT; as well as four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, brother, Vincent, and sister, Gabrielle.
The Brancato family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation for Dr. Nidal Makhoul; the nursing staff of Floors 5 and 7 at CVPH; the compassionate care at Elizabethtown community hospital; and the commitment, care and support of the administration and staff of Champlain Valley Senior Community.
His family will receive friends on Sunday, January 29, from 2:00 to 4:00PM, at Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St, Plattsburgh. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Adirondack Mountain Club, PO Box 4390, Queensbury, NY, 12804(https://adk.org).
