John L. Coupal, Sr. 85, of Truman Avenue, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2018 at his home with his loving family by his side under the care of Hospice of the North Country. He was born in Champlain, NY on September 15, 1933, the son of Albert and Lucrece (Tetreault) Coupal. John married his wife Janet (Towner) Coupal on November 6, 1954 at St. Peter's Church in Plattsburgh. They owned and operated their own dairy farm in Beekmantown and Coupal's Mini Mart on Point Au Roche. His greatest joy was spending time with his family at their home on the lake. For over 25 years, he and Janet travelled to Tavares, Florida to spend the winters. John enjoyed fishing, playing softball, bowling, basketball, hockey and horseshoes. He coached hockey for many years in the Plattsburgh area. Anyone who knew John knew he liked to play and loved to win (by any means necessary): "Second place was first loser." John was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Janet, in 2010. He is survived by three sons: John Coupal, Jr. and his wife Debbie of Keeseville, James Coupal and his wife Sue of Point Au Roche, Jerry Coupal and his wife Debbie of Florida, and a daughter, Jane Renadette and her husband Dennis of Plattsburgh; nine grandchildren: Todd Coupal and his wife Amanda of Peru, Glenn Coupal and his wife Katie of Plattsburgh, Jason Renadette and his wife Brianne of Plattsburgh, Jeremy Renadette of Plattsburgh, Jessica Hanson and her husband Jason of Dannemora, Jamie Coupal and her fiancé David Lawrence of Plattsburgh, Jeremiah Coupal, Jerrod Coupal and Jerry Coupal, Jr. all of Florida; several great-grandchildren, and his companion, Janetta Rose of Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at 10:00 am at St. Peter's Church in Plattsburgh. John will be interred at St. Peter's Cemetery next to his wife. Donations in John's memory may be made to Hospice of the North Country, C/O Brown Funeral Home. Arrangements are entrusted to Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St., Plattsburgh, N.Y. (518) 561-3980.
