John P. Gibson, Plattsburgh passed away on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at the age of 95 at Clinton County Nursing Home. John was born on February 22, 1928 in Saluda, South Carolina to Bertha Jones. John served in the United State Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953.
Upon leaving the service, John attended the New York Institute of Criminology where he studied for his position as the head of security for R.H. Macy’s. He was married to his one and only, Barbara A. Gibson (Barcomb) on April 28, 1962 at St. Jean de Paul Church in Manhattan, New York. He later worked for the New York City Board of Education as an educator for the D.A.R.E. program and then as a counselor for the students of his school. John lived in Brooklyn, New York for most of his life and upon retirement relocated to Plattsburgh. He enjoyed watching baseball, traveling with his wife by boat, car, and plane to beautiful places. John’s favorite pastime was watching the trees and mother nature through the windows of his sunroom and marveling at the beauty of the world. John was a faithful communicant of Our Lady of Solace Church and Holy Cross Parish. John was known as “Cuban Pete” to his family and close friends and he loved to dance and listen to music.
Left to cherish the memories of a full life are his wife, Barbara of Plattsburgh. A daughter, Toni Mieles (Gibson), her husband, Christopher Mieles of West Chazy, daughter Michele Gibson of Plattsburgh and two grandchildren Christopher Mieles and Dayna Mieles.
John was an only child, but considered his brother and sister in laws his family. Spending time with Alton and Beverly, Albert and Deenie, Adrian and Mary, and Francis at family gatherings and trips were some of his favorite times.
John was predeceased by his mother, Bertha Jones (October 7, 1974) and his daughter, Sharon Renee Gibson (May 28,2006), his mother and father in law, Delia and Leon Trombley, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at Brown’s Funeral Home, 29 Broad Street, Plattsburgh from 3:00-6:00 pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be 2:00 pm on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 at St. Peter’s Church. Interment will be Tuesday, May 2 at 11 am in St. Louis of France Cemetery in Sciota, New York.
