John R Hay

February 20, 1945 — June 2, 2023

John Robert Hay, 78, passed away on Friday, June 2, 2023 with his family by his side. John was born in Plattsburgh on February 20, 1945, to Robert and Florence Hay. He graduated from Mount Assumption Institute (MAI) in 1964, where he was a standout football player. John was also a decorated speed skater. He went on to earn both master’s and bachelor's degrees in education from SUNY Plattsburgh.

John had several careers including police officer for the City of Plattsburgh and serving as a Town Judge for Beekmantown. His favorite, though, was that of a teacher. He taught at several schools and the Department of Corrections, but particularly cherished his time at St. John’s Academy where he taught social studies. He was a strict enforcer and a tough grader, but his students respected him and he loved challenging them. John spent many years on the Clinton County Planning Board and also managed Beekmantown Senior Housing, where he became a favorite of the residents. John was also a member of the Plattsburgh Lion’s Club.

To say that John was a family man would just scratch the surface of what meant everything to him. His first date with the love of his life, Ginny, started at a St. Patrick’s Day party and ended with them closing down the Roman Gardens restaurant in Plattsburgh. They were married just over a year later, and recently celebrated their 53rd anniversary. John and Ginny welcomed two sons, Christopher and David, and spent their parenting years supporting the boys’ athletic pursuits, including many weekends at ice rinks and football stadiums throughout New York and New England. John was just as dedicated to his four granddaughters, who adored him. When they were little he was a great diaper changer and caregiver and as they got older he continued to be a great snuggler and all-around supporter of all they did. This included watching lacrosse, soccer, and hockey games, attending musicals, and discussing Stephen King and James Patterson novels, for he was also a voracious reader.

John is survived by his wife, Ginny, whom he doted on throughout their long marriage. Also left to cherish many memories are his sons, Christopher Hay (Tobi) and David Hay (Lauren), and granddaughters Abby, Stella, Reagan, and Cora. He also leaves behind three brothers, Jim Hay (Carol), Frank Hay (Kathy), Bill Hay (Sarah), and one sister, Marie Varno (Jim). John was also a loving uncle to nieces Lisa, Melissa, and Jennifer, and nephews John, Bob, Mike, John, Clifford, Ken, Eric, Stephen, Patrick, and Matthew.
