Mr. John D. Huru, 78, of Cumberland Avenue, Plattsburgh, New York passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at the CVPH Medical Center with his family by his side. He was born on March 1, 1933 in Hancock, Michigan son of John and Marian (Simonson) Huru. He graduated Hancock High School in 1950 and received a BS Degree in Civil Engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1954 belonging to the National Engineering Society. He obtained his PE in 1971. 1954 John was commissioned into the U. S. Air Force. Upon completion of pilot training, he was assigned to 820th distillation squadron at Plattsburgh Air Force Base. June 1957 John completed his active duty tour and began a civilian career serving as a Program Engineer and Design Engineer until May 1967 when he left Federal Civil Service to become the City Engineer of Plattsburgh. He returned to Federal Civil Service in July 1971 and served as Chief Engineer and later as Deputy Civil Engineer until 1993 when he assumed the position of Site Manager for the Air Force Base Conversion Agency following the closure of PAFB. He retired April 1999. Continuing an Air Force Reserve flying career in the Vermont Air Guard 1957, John served as a pilot in the 134th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. He retired 1975 as a Colonel with over 1,800 hours of flying time in various interceptor aircraft. He was predeceased by his parents John and Marian Huru and a brother William Huru. John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jacqueline (Spiegel) Huru. 3 sons, Kenneth (Marijane) of Hudson, MA, Peter (Elisa) of Oroville, CA and David of Plattsburgh, his grandchildren, Derrik, Courtney and Miranda (Brian Garrity) and a great grandson, Beau Garrity. Mr. Huru was an avid sportsman. He had participated in gentleman's hockey, marathon running including the Marine Corps event in D.C. He loved to ski Whiteface every winter, bicycle in the summer, golf, hunt and fish in the seasons. John will be missed by his family many friends and playmates. There will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Church. Interment will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the Kent Delord House Museum 17 Cumberland Ave., Plattsburgh, New York 12901 or Learning Center for Deaf Children, 848 Central Street Framingham, MA, 01701.
