John Delaney Ryan, Jr., 84, of South Catherine Street, Plattsburgh, New York passed away on Tuesday February 25, 2020 at his home after being ill the last few years. He was born in Plattsburgh on May 11, 1935, the son of John and Helen (Forbes) Ryan, Sr.
John grew up in Plattsburgh and graduated from St. John’s Academy where he was very active in sports. He later attended Champlain College and St. Michael’s College in VT. He was a veteran of the US Army Reserves and later worked for the USPS in Plattsburgh until 1969 when he left to open his own business. He has owned and operated the Store Tavern which just celebrated it’s 50 years anniversary recently.
John loved sports and enjoyed playing softball in local leagues and playing in city league basketball for many years. He was a member of the American Legion Auxillary, Elks Lodge and Moose Lodge .
He is survived by a brother James N. Ryan of Groton, CT., his nephews; Shawn P. Ryan of Plattsburgh and Roark K. Ryan of Montville, CT., a niece: Shannon B. Ryan (spouse Randall Jackson) of Groton, CT., several great nieces and nephews and many great, great nieces and nephews
He was predeceased by his parents and a brother Thomas F. Ryan of Plattsburgh.
Calling hours will be held on Monday March 2, 2020 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday March 3, 2020 at 11:00 am at St. John’s Church in Plattsburgh. Burial will be later in the year in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Donations in John’s memory may be made to the Foundation of CVPH or St. Jude’s Children Hospital.
