Plattsburgh Mr. Lawrence W. Doyle, 89, Lawrence W. Doyle, 89, died Thursday, April 12, 2012 at his home in Plattsburgh. Larry was born on March 14, 1923 in Springfield, Massachusetts, son of Jenny Murtagh Doyle and John William Doyle, Sr. The family returned to Plattsburgh in 1927. Besides his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his sister Catherine Elizabeth Doyle and a brother John (Jack) Doyle, Jr. He is survived by his cousins Elsie Henaghan Golovach, Joan Henaghan Lambert, Millie Henaghan Tripp and Thomas Henaghan. Larry attended schools in Plattsburgh. His first job was, with Jack, as a golf caddy for which they were paid 75 cents or a dollar "if we were lucky." At age 19, Larry joined the US Army where he served in Company L 30th Infantry Third Division in North Africa, Italy, Germany and Austria. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Distinguished Unit Badge with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. His service affected him for the remainder of his years, as he stoically faced any adversity by comparing it favorably to having been in a foxhole. Upon his return home from the war, he resided with his family and helped his father & brother build the home on Elizabeth Street where he resided until his passing. He was employed by the Dock and Coal Company, and then worked in construction as a member of the Laborers Local Union 186 until retirement. Quiet and modest, Larry impressed others with his gentle spirit and his strong faith. Larry was a devoted and generous member of St. John's throughout his life and recently contributed to the construction of a new accessible entrance. He leaves behind many friends, including Andrew Wylie, David and Martha Gulley, Alice and Robert Parker, Colleen Monty and Betty Cole. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church at 4:00 pm on Friday, April 13, 2012. Burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
