Linda M Mcguire

Linda M. McGuire, 74, passed away Monday June 16, 2020 at her home with her family by her side. She was born on February 25, 1946 the daughter of Watson and Mildred (Van Dusen) Winslow. She is survived by her husband of 55 years Dennis, their children Laura Miller and her husband Steve, Karla McGuire, and Mark McGuire and his wife Angela, her grandchildren; Emily Miller, Sophia Dominicis, and Mila and Madden McGuire. She was predeceased by her parents.
Linda graduated from Hadley-Luzerne Central School in 1962 at the age of 16. She went on to receive a BS degree from Plattsburgh State University in math education in 1966 and later a MS degree in 1971. She started teaching high school math in Ausable Forks High school in 1966 at the age of 20. She also taught math in Plattsburgh State’s Upward Bound program. In 1979, Linda had a lab of Commodore PET computers. She went back to college to learn several programming languages including BASIC, Fortran, Pascal, and APL. Linda then taught these languages to her students along with online text-only explorations of the NEW internet. She started the computer program to elementary schools introducing keyboarding, word processing and database use. Later on, she had a new Macintosh computer lab and taught several courses to teachers helping them to integrate technology into their classrooms. In 1994, Linda was appointed to be a member of the NYS Teacher Center’s Technology Committee. She would travel to NYC to learn cutting edge technology and then present this information at state computer conferences. Linda was also involved in the Empire Enterprise Zone CyberEd program. This involved an 18-wheeler outfitted with internet capable computers and video conferencing that traveled across the country. Linda taught on CyberEd in the Los Angeles area. One could say she was a pioneer in the world of computers.
Linda retired as a teacher from AuSable Valley High School in 2000 after teaching for 33 years. In her retirement years, she enjoyed traveling, covering all 50 states, the Carribean, as well as many countries from Europe, China, New Zealand and Australia.
In her younger years, she enjoyed being active: bowling, boating, waterskiing, horseback riding, gardening, saltwater fishing and downhill skiing. She was an avid genealogist, spending many hours researching, tracing some family lines back to the 1500’s.

Visitation will be Saturday, June 20, 2020 from 10:00-11:00am at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A Funeral Service will follow at 11:00am in the Brown Funeral Home Chapel. Face covering and social distancing is required during services.
