Lorraine Almeda Fish, 80, of West Chazy, passed away peacefully at CVPH with her loving and supportive family by her side on Friday, July 20, 2018 after a series of illnesses. Lorraine was born March 28, 1938, the seventh of eight children of Lauren and Almeda McLaughlin Gilbert of Turner, ME. She attended schools in Turner, graduating from Leavitt Institute and attended the University of Maine in Farmington. She and her husband Joe moved to the Plattsburgh area in 1959, where they raised their family of two sons and two daughters. They owned and operated their family business, The Wood Grain Unfinished Furniture store for over 40 years in Cadyville. Lorraine had an incredible zest for life, a quick wit and a huge heart. She was known for her delicious cooking and endless baking, including, her famous peanut butter squares, apple pies, sweet breads, jams, jellies and Christmas chocolates. Sewing and making homemade crocheted gifts for family and friends was one of her greatest joys. A lover of flowers, gardening, birds, books and of numerous games, she excelled at Cribbage and Scrabble and always welcomed the opportunity for some friendly competition - a legacy she has passed on to her family. Lorraine is survived by her husband of 59 years, and their children, Joseph and wife Cathy of West Chazy, daughter Theresa Penfield and husband Mike of West Chazy, daughter Iris Bader and husband Brian of Eastchester, NY, and son Stephen Fish of Plattsburgh. Her grandchildren Joseph Fish and wife Jessica, Christopher Fish, Chesney Weeden and husband Nathan, Jerred Penfield and wife Sarah, Alec and Audrey Bader. She leaves behind four great grandchildren, Brantley and Asher Penfield, Jett Fish and Azalyn Weeden. She is also survived by her sister Elaine Bonney and her husband Weston of Portland, ME, a brother Robert Gilbert and wife Deborah of Lexington, KY and three sisters-in-law: Jean, Bernice and Patricia Gilbert, all of Turner, ME. She is predeceased by five brothers: Lauren, Leighton, Durwood, Winston and Gerald Gilbert. Lorraine was also adored by her two foreign-exchange granddaughters, Nicole Dinsel of Germany and Juliana Morelli of Brazil, as well as her cat Smokey Boy - who proudly gave her small fish and toads fetched from their brook. The family would like to offer our sincere appreciation to the amazing staff at CVPH who provided exceptional care and devotion to Lorraine, and to the many people who helped her at Meadowbrook and Plattsburgh Rehabilitation.
