Madeline Gagnon, 95, of Plattsburgh, NY, passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at the UVM Health Network-CVPH surrounded by her loving daughters. She was born in Hemingford, PQ, Canada on July 18, 1919 and immigrated to the United States when she was six months old. She is the daughter of John Fisher and Ellen Jane (Kingsbury) Fisher. Madeline attended Chazy Central Rural School, graduating in 1938. She attended the State Teachers College of Plattsburgh and received her Bachelor of Education degree in 1942. She went on to teach kindergarten for twenty years in the Peru, NY and Roslyn, NY school systems. In 1943 she married Clovis R. Gagnon, also from Chazy, NY. After the war, they moved to Long Island, NY, where they lived in Levittown and later, Glen Head, NY. In 1973 they retired and moved back to Chazy. When her children were grown and moved away, she and Clovis moved to Ridge Manor, FL, and spent ten wonderful years there. They then moved back to Plattsburgh. Her husband, Clovis, died in 1993. Madeline loved her family and friends, reading, gardening and her beloved camp on the lake in Chazy where she spent every summer for over 50 years. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church, whether she lived in Chazy, New York or Florida, singing in the choir and serving on various committees. In 2001 she married John B. West, and spent several happy years living with John in Plattsburgh. She was predeceased by her husband, Clovis, and her son, Bruce S. Gagnon. Madeline is survived by her husband, John B. West of Plattsburgh; daughters: Barbara McLeod and her husband, Scott, of Falmouth, ME, and Leah Poissant and her husband, Joseph, of Chazy; granddaughters, Ellen Madeline McLeod, Pamela (Gagnon) DeWalt, Felicia Gagnon and Teresa Gagnon; grandsons Alex McLeod, Devin Poitras and David Poitras; great grandsons, Nicholas DeWalt and Joshua DeWalt; as well as nieces Brenda (Fisher) Feldman and her husband Ted of TX and Jennifer (Fisher) Efford and her husband, Bob, of CA, and many more nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Monday, March 2, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. There will be no public services. Interment will be at a later date at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Chazy, NY. Donations in Madeline's memory may be made to the Skilled Nursing Facility at UVMHN-CVPH.
