Lake Placid, NY- Katie Sames Gluck passed away peacefully at Elderwood of Uihlein at Lake Placid Nursing Home on Friday, October 14, 2022.
Born in Hamburg, NY, Margaret Katherine (Katie) Mannix was the daughter of Martin and Gertrude Mannix. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Plattsburgh, NY where they planted their roots.
As one of seven children in a family of modest means, Katie learned that the power of love, friendship, and loyalty were more important than material things. She is survived by her siblings Thomas (Betsy) Mannix of Senora, CA, Patricia Davies, Red Bluff, CA. Timothy (Catherine) Mannix, Cary, NC, Martin Mannix, Plattsburgh, NY, and Molly (Marlin) Gerber, Lolo, MT. She is pre-deceased by her brother Michael, sisters-in-law Peggy, Ric and Alice, and brother-in-law Bill.
Katie graduated from St. John’s High School, earned a BS in Nursing from State University College Plattsburgh where she was a proud member of Phi Kappa Chi establishing lifelong friendships with her sorority sisters that endure to this day. She married her high school sweetheart, Raymond, and together they raised their pride and joy, Matt and Sarah.
Katie was the eternal optimist and always had a kind word to share, accompanied by a hug and a kiss. She was beloved by her many nieces and nephews, and her friend/sister-in-law, Judy. She adored her grandchildren Madison, Reagan and Hannah Sames and Casey King. When our family’s charity, Hannah’s Hope Fund, was in a frenzied fundraising mode, Katie spearheaded the annual North Country Golf Tournament in memory of Mike Mannix, and raised tens of thousands of dollars for HHF. As only Katie and Mike would have it, the tournament was full of trick shots and shenanigans.
Katie had a distinguished career as the Director of Nursing at Meadowbrook Healthcare for nearly 30 years. Countless co-workers of Katie’s have shared how much she taught them about nursing, compassion and kindness. Her legacy lives on in the hard work and loving nature of generations of healthcare workers throughout the North Country. But her impact on families didn’t stop there. Katie taught Lamaze to hundreds of couples and guided them through the process of childbirth.
An avid golfer (with a hole in one her second year playing the game), phenomenal cook, gardener, singer, bridge player, sports fan, fitness enthusiast and loyal friend…Katie lived a full life. Some of her greatest joys were attending the many athletic events Matt and Sarah participated in, and she never missed a game. Eight years after Raymond passed, Katie and Dr. Stephen Gluck were married, until his death in 2019.
As Katie would say, “Don’t cry because she is gone. Smile because she was here.” In honor of Katie’s request, a Celebration of Life will be held in early Summer 2023. While toasting with Chardonnay, we will tell stories, laugh and sing in tribute to Katie.
Memorial donations can be made to a charity of one's choice.
