Margaret L "Lena" Whalen (Labarre)

Plattsburgh Mrs. Margaret "Lena" Whalen, 88, most recently of the Vilas Home, passed away Thursday June 16, 2016 at the UVM CVPH Medical Center. She was born in Ellenburg, New York on February 16, 1928 the daughter of Henry and Lena (Robideau) LaBarre. Lena was an avid reader and quilter; she had an eye for color in making her beautiful quilts. She married Lawrence L. Whalen, August 5, 1947 at St. Edmund's church in Ellenburg, NY. In her younger years, Lena could be found going to antique auctions with her sister, Rose. She was a member of St. Peter's Church, belonged to the Altar Rosary Society, the Catholic Daughters and was a member of the Franciscan Order. Lena was proud to be a Eucharistic Minister. Lena was a devoted wife and mother to her children. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, her grandson, Matthew Whalen, her sister, Theresa Carter and her husband Ray, her brothers; Bruce, Lester, Bernard, and Louie and his wife Ruth, her brother-in-law Carlton Whalen. She is survived by her children; Lawrence Whalen, Jr. and his wife Ann of Schuyler Falls, Carolyn Robinson and her husband Alec of Wappinger Falls, NY, Lauren Lloyd and her husband David of Glens Falls, Gena LaPointe and her husband Timothy of Chazy, NY; her grandchildren; Christopher LaPointe, Patrick Whalen and Susan Whalen; her siblings; Rose Oliver of Plattsburgh, and Charles LaBarre and his wife Betty of New Mexico, her sister-in-laws; Deneige LaBarre, Hazel LaBarre, Margreta Pugh, Regina Dumond, several nieces and nephews, and her Vilas Home family. Calling hours will be Monday, June 20, 2016 from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1:00 pm at St. Peter's Church. Interment will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mission of Hope, the Emmaus Room at St. Peter's Church, Pibbles and More Animal Rescue or a charity of one's choice.
