Marguerite Coulter Eisinger, beloved granny, mom, sister and friend, died peacefully Tuesday, September 21, at home, and surrounded by family. She was preceded in death by her husband Peter Eisinger, an orthopedic surgeon at CVPH until his unexpected death in 1980.
Marg embraced life in a way that was inspirational and contagious. Born in Mumbai, India, she spent her early years in France and Wimbledon, England, where she met her husband and emigrated to Montreal, Canada, prior to settling in Plattsburgh.
Marg had a lifetime passion for travel, the arts, music (especially opera), films, literature, watching tennis and enjoying local cuisine wherever she went. Sailing Lake Champlain on ‘Impatience’ with family and friends was another of her great pleasures, along with skiing, yet perhaps what she is most remembered for is her open arms and ability to converse on any topic, with curiosity, sophistication and strong opinions. Just as her own friends on several continents did, her children’s friends stayed in touch with her over decades. The house in Cliff Haven, where she spent 50 years, always promised a warm greeting.
As a widow raising four children, Marg earned her B.A at SUNY Plattsburgh and Master’s in art history at Syracuse University, specializing in Italian Renaissance art, and subsequently joined the faculty of SUNY Plattsburgh to teach art history and film and to serve as curator of the Rockwell Kent gallery. During these years, she led the museum docents on annual art history tours to special sites in Europe and beyond.
Granny loved her grandchildren Frances, Brendan, Emily and Anna Eisinger, and her extra grandchildren Hollee Candido and Marine Ghazaryan; her children Dominic (Melissa) Eisinger, Claudia Eisinger, Philip (Alaina) Eisinger, and Natasha (Alan) Neuroth; her siblings Patty and John Coulter and Peter Eisinger’s siblings Clare (Ralph) Apel and Anthony (Marie-Claude) Eisinger; and their children.
A mass will be held on November 19 at 10 am St. Peter’s Church in Plattsburgh. There will not be a wake, however, the family will be outside the church after the service to greet attendees. A digital memorial will be held via Zoom in December. In lieu of flowers and if you are moved to make a charitable gift in Marg’s honor, please consider Hospice of the North Country.
