Mary Kathleen Roden-Tice, PhD, passed away on the morning of July 14, 2018 after a 2 ½ year battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Born on November 8, 1952, daughter of Mary and William Sheehan, Mary was a devoted mother, grandmother, wife, and teacher. She was a geology faculty member at SUNY Plattsburgh for 23 years and loved her students, geology, and the Adirondacks. In 2013 she was awarded the SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Geology for her dedication to mentoring and inspiring her students. Known for involving her students in her research, Mary's over 25 published papers, 93 abstracts, 15 grants and contracts, and numerous guidebook articles explored the uplift of the Adirondacks. She was well recognized and respected for her contributions to the geologic understanding of the Northeastern US. Mary was an outdoors enthusiast and birdwatcher. She was an avid hiker, climbing the 46 Adirondack High Peaks to become a "46er" in 2009, taught spinning at the college and ran half-marathons. Mary was the first woman to earn a geology degree from Kirkland College(now Hamilton) in 1974, obtained her MS from Kansas State University and her Ph.D. From RPI. She is survived by her spouse, Steven J. Tice; children, Katherine Marie Symonds and Christopher James Roden; grandchildren, Tyler Symonds, and Jacob Roden; and mother Mary Sheehan.
