Melvin E "Mel" Bennett Sr

Mr. Melvin E. “Mel” Bennett, Sr. 87, of Bushey Blvd., Plattsburgh passed away Saturday, February 09, 2013 at the CVPH Medical Center with family by his side. He was born in Constable, New York on September 25, 1925 the son of Warren J. and Helen (LeVan) Bennett. He and his wife Lyn lived and raised their family on the Ashley Road in West Chazy before moving to Plattsburgh in 1986. Mel worked at Georgia Pacific Paper Miller retiring in 1987 after 39 years of service. At the time of his retirement he operated and repaired the Petti Bone in the wood yard. He worked several part time jobs while working full time at the mill to support his large family. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and vegetable gardening. Mel was an avid bowler and competed in the Empire State Senior Games where he won a silver medal in bowling. He enjoyed traveling to Williamsport, PA to watch the Little League World Series, taking drives and dining out. Mel was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Plattsburgh Lodge #621 and was proud to bowl on a team with his son and grandson. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Ethelyn “Lyn” Bennett, his sisters; Frances Bennett, Doris Clukey and his brother Walter Bennett, Sr.
Mel is survived by his children, Helen Bodnar and her husband Robert of the Villages, FL, Lynne Lowe and her husband James of Williamsport, PA, Melvin Bennett, Jr. and his wife Carol of Las Vegas, NV, Janet Stahl and her husband John of Milford, PA, Janice Butler and her husband Thomas of Beekmantown, Gail Soldato and her husband Donald of CO, Guy Bennett and his wife Cathy of Jersey Shore, PA, Warren J. Bennett and his wife Kathy of Plattsburgh, 20 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, his lady friend Mildred Renadette of Plattsburgh and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Thursday, February 14, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St., Plattsburgh, New York.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, February 15, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church.
Interment will be at a later date at St. Peter’s Cemetery.
Friends wishing may make donations in his memory to the Plattsburgh Lodge of Elks #621 Building Fund.
There will be an Elks Ritualistic Service Thursday evening at 6:45 p.m.
